Elk Pic in current BC Outdoors mag

Tacky and in bad taste for sure. I tend to think of the game I chase as being worthy adversaries, and that in itself means you show a little respect to the animal. Maybe that is too oldschool or "fudd"-ish of me though.

Do you mean showing respect after you blast a softball sized hole in their lungs?

I think there's possibly a little jealousy over the animal she took...

for the record: I do not hunt elk, have never hunted elk, have never bought an elk tag.

and I think there's a possibly you're slightly retarded.

c'mon, using my goat head? apples and oranges. do you see me riding said goat head? or goat for that matter? head on a platter.... well that would be quite respectful, or perhaps you don;t know the history of such a thing? like in Bavaria where the head of the kill would be take to the bar after the hunt, placed in the center of the table and talk about and drank to for the rest of the night. but lets not talk of such things, as it's passe to treat your game as a worth opponent and give it a place of honor. rather we should disrespect it by treating like a domestic animal and riding it.

could be worse, she could be holding up it's severed heart in one hand, bloody knife in the other, for a photo ;)

the pic is not that big of a deal IMO

that was a heart not a head IIRC, and you wanted to eat it so I removed it, all part of the game.

in the end, this thread has you guys talking about something other then bear defense or is a .30-06 enough gun for whitetail ;)

Okay, this thread just took a SERIOUSLY wrong turn. Riding a goat head?? Riding a goat?? (well, not like a goat is that far a stretch from a sheep I guess and we've ALL been there, right?).

Well, duh!! Spear and "it all depends on shot placement, a .22 is enough for a whitetail ".

Fully agreed! I hate those cheap, wannabe pieces of sh**. Free with any six pack come Stampede time

Exactly. The idiots who think they're classy get the black ones with the Jack Daniels logo and the elastic around the inside LOL

On the topic, I don't think the photo does the best job showing the trophy that the elk is, but I believe most hunters don't think much about it when posing for the 'grip and grin shot'. I feel the same when I see a big fish being held up by the gills. There are ways to pose a picture that looks a lot better.

A woman killed an elk and sat on it, holding the rack up for a picture...

The HORROR!!!
:jerkit:

I bet a puppy was murdered at the same time the pic was taken....

Better not be my new puppy that I'm supposed to be picking up Oct 15 in Vegreville Alberta...

I do agree with Amphib... finally we're on about something other than bear defense..:D

As for photos... well when I do manage to take one, which is rare, I do not think about poses and lighting and such,.. I want big smiles, dirt hands, runny noses and muddy boots...

I find the opposite is what I don't really like... the perfect pose,...roses and of course the prper background,...a few logos if at all posiible, provided you're shooting a SAKO or better With a Schmidt or better and hannywaggy's or better,...

I posted a video of my uncles moose hunting trip in this forum,...
a bunch of guys out having a good time, could care less how they look for the pictures or if the animal is presented properly,...uh oh, even a few beer in the pics,... for mr that is real...there is no posing, no image, no blah blah blah... but again, to each their own...if ya need to get you tanning sessions in before the hunt (gotta look good in the pics:D) so be it...

ROTFLMAO!
Nothing wrong with the pic. I think the disrespect started in hunting the animal for sport. If it was just meat we're after, there's a lot less expensive ways to do it. Nobody in this day and age hunts a big 6x6 bull elk because they're starving. We hunt it because it's fun. We enjoy the sport of it. Wait... killing a big beautiful creature for FUN? talk about disrespect.

The regulations state that we can only shoot a 6 point or larger elk or a 4 point or larger buck so your comment just tells me that you don't have a clue.

Not where I hunt. 3 point or larger bull elk, or cows on a draw system. Bucks must have at least 4" in length. What does that have to do with anything. If you find sitting on a trophy disrespectful, you should reconsider what your hobby is. Killing for sport is far more disrespectful. Saying you do it only for the meat is BS. There's cheaper ways to get meat. So you're not getting the meat because you're starving. You're hunting for recreation. Killing for recreation. That's far more disrespectful than taking a photo while sitting on the game. IF you respect the animal that much, why did you KILL IT?

Actually, while I generally agree with your sentiment (see my comments earlier in the thread), in B.C., a 6 point elk is the smallest legal bull you can shoot in most of the province. As most hunters are meat hunters first and trophy hunters second, yeah, a lot of guys (and gals) hunt 6 point elk around here that are doing it for the meat (not saying she was (or wasn't); I have no idea).

I see too many pictures taken with their gun laying over the animal and pointing right at the guy's head. I do have a problem with that type of picture. This young lady has her gun in a safe position.

I dunno about that -- hunting close to home on foot, no quad or camper, cutting my own meat, etc, I'm typically out about $500 to $600 for a season (most of that in fuel bills). Last time I bought steaks at Safeway (admittedly some years ago), they were about $10 to $15 each. We eat steaks (that I consider significantly superior to beef) at my house 3 to 4 nights a week. Seems fairly economical to me, all things considered, and we ain't even talked about sausage, stew, stir fry, or jerky yet. There is more to it than "just the meat", don't get me wrong -- but honestly, if it cost me say, $5,000 to $6,000 a year to hunt instead of $500/$600; I'd go in with a couple buddies on a ranch buffalo, and then go take some nature hikes across the road from my house to get my outdoors fix.

I wouldn't do it myself, it's a bit tasteless, but it dont really bother me if someone else wanted to do it with their own kill. Who know's, she might of really neaded the rest!
