ELK Rifle, best calibre

I just wish they wouldn't be so protective on allowing fellow Canadians in on their excellent mule deer and antelope hunting!

I couldn't agree with you more, in the '60s and '70s I fed them and now as a BC resident I cannot hunt them.
This 69 yr. old buzzard would give his left one for one more ' speed goat ' hunt....

No worries, it's all in good fun. :)

Saskatchewan actually has one of the most diverse terrains within Canada and a lack of a big city attitude and politics, something many of us should be jealous of.

Here in MB, we used to compete with SK for "car theft capital", "murder capital" and "transfer payment King", but since they've yanked the NDP, found oil and potash, it's a no contest.

I just wish they wouldn't be so protective on allowing fellow Canadians in on their excellent mule deer and antelope hunting!

There aren't enough antelope to support a season for residents now.

IMHO, The best elk caliber is the .308, that could be from a 30-06 or 300WM......which is correct caliber or calibre? :)

Seriously, that is a sad thing to hear...

Actually it's nothing new. There were tons in the 90s then the population crashed. They recovered enough for a season to re-open but not long enough for me to draw a tag. Now it's crashed and closed again. I can say that there is a good chance that not only have I not had a Saskatchewan antelope tag in 20 years. But that it is entirely possible that I will never get another, even though I see them on my own land. That doesn't make me feel like sharing.

I totally understand your feeling about sharing.
The small band we had eating our hay in the winter and grazing in our cattle pastures seemed out of place considering their normal range in those days would be in the South / Southwest of the province instead of directly South of S'toon.
My last tag was in 1965...

Calibre .... .308/7.62 put some powder behind it ...... .300 Winchester or .300 Weatherby.

We hunt elk in g-bear country ....... had one 'move in' on me while calling. Others have looked me over ....... all ended well for g-bears and me.

Since you chose to use the word "reality," I feel the need to point out that "most" chose something other than .30/06... 43% chose the .30/06... 43% is not "most."

Gosh Hoyt, now you're a grammar expert. I'm sure you are held in high esteem, by your girls, but I really doubt that a bunch of middle aged men, hang on every one of your words. Sure you know guns, but recently, it looks like you are more focused on trolling other member's comments, which is a real shame for this site. Hopefully, you'll channel your energy towards more constructive discussion. All the best:)

My response was not "grammatical" in nature, rather spoke to the meaning, definition or intent of the text... the impetus for it was a reaction to the arrogant nature of your comment. I know you are a young fella, sitting in a dark room playing with a tactical 870... and I am all for mentoring youngsters... but I think if you go back and reread your last 50 posts or so, you will discern an undeserved arrogance in the tone. As per your gracious request, I will do my utmost to channel my energies in a positive direction for the edification of the CGN community. I wish you a fine and fulfilling evening.

When Ardent asked members to vote for a cartridge that would effectively dispatch ALL big game species in North America (I.e. The Ultimate North American Hunting Round), including elk, moose, bison, grizzly & brown bear and polar bear, most voted for the .30-06. Now, when asked what is best for elk, most want a magnum, when that same .30-06 is plenty. Irony? "A simple way of putting it is that irony usually signals a difference between the appearance of things and reality."

I can't recall the last Elk I've seen shot with a magnum. In fact, I don't think I have seen one. That is reality.

There's so many great calibers to chose from its hard to make a choice some times. People I talk to have told stories of others using pretty much everything from 243win up to a 375H&H. Personally I like my Model 70 in 7mmRM. Very accurate and I have no doubt about a federal 150gr trophy copper bullet doing the job on an elk.

I can, and somehow it seemed deader to me than the one I saw shot by the '06...but only just a little.:p
