The OP can simply ask the guide for a kind, gentle, sure footed horse. Instead of one of those darn, saber toothed, stock breaking, insubordinate ones

The father in law ran horses for an outfitter for many years, summered them at his hobby farm. When I first met them, the now wife decided we should go for a ride. When asked about the temperment of his horses, I got the reply 'haven't lost an American yet', which was both funny and troubling at the time....

Horses are dumber than gravel. Every last one of them secretly wants to kill you or itself and isn't picky about which one it is.

Why is that exactly? It's a pretty poor tool for situations encountered on an expensive Elk hunt.

Call it personal preference. I find the much shorter gun much easier to use from horseback...
