I have decided that I "need" a dedicated elk set-up for next year's season. I have always had success with minimal cartridges in the past but would like to really focus on elk specifically.

Just looking for suggestions (gun/glass). Budget $2500 ish

Elk live in the hard places that take time and elevation to get to. The Sako A7 is a great rifle and the 300 Win Mag is a classic elk cartridge. http://shooterschoice. ca/product/sako-a7-roughtech-pro/ is a great deal on one with a fibreglass stock.

I'd use a set of Warnes and a Leupold 3.5-10x40 and call is a day. Use the remaining money to stock up on Accubonds.
 
.338 Win Mag in a Tikka 695 or T3 with a Swaro 2.5-10 or Leupold VXIII (or similar) in 2.5-8 or 3.5-10

My current dedicated elk rifle is an older Sako L61R in 9.3x62 with Trijicon 1-4 Accupoint.
 
I've been using a 300 Win for some years, great caliber.

That said, considering all my hunting is about deer and elk, my next rifle will very likely be .270 Win...or maybe .270 WSM. Only knock on these around my stomping grounds is the question of right medicine for griz. Nevertheless, .270 in either are excellent calibers for elk.

I'd be looking real hard at the Tikka T3, albeit if I ever can afford it I have a serious lust happening for a Wby Mk V Ultralight, which weigh in around 5.75 lbs.

The only scope that I'd put on it would be a Bushnell Elite 4500 2.5-10x40 Duplex. IMHO, the glass in these rivals scopes costing 2 to 4 times as much money, awesome clarity and brightness! Used Elites for decades, the one or two issues that ever happened were looked after by Bushnell without question.

And of course, mounted with Burris Signature rings; nothing else goes on my rifles.
 
Any thing from 25 - 30 cal , based on a 30-06 cas or larger works good, how about a 6.5-300 WBY MAG ( will push you over budget), It worked well for me this year. Most popular would be a 7mm REM mag, 300 win or 300 wby, Or how about a 300 RUM.
 
T3 Hunter, 9.3x62, was eating elk jerky earlier today, did its part. I've had better much luck in the thicker stuff than in open country with elk, went to the 9.3 and haven't been as inclined to the 300WM since. Scope is a 2.5-10x50 prostaff 7, though I would like a minox 2-10x50.

I will be switching to a Steyr model M next year, in the same caliber. Both lefty's.
 
340weatherby in a lightweight rifle or any of the ones listed. I would try to keep it on light side as it will be carried more than shot
 
I say 35 Whelen,

So if you're buying new in that budget. M700 CDL SF in 35 Whelen with a VX-3 3.5-10x40.

But a M70 Extreme Weather in 300wm with the same VX3 would be tough to pass up.
 
I really like my Weatherby Backcountry. Nice and light to carry, accurate and ceracoated to resist the elements. I have the .257 bee but for elk .30-06 , 300 win or bee would work as well. Top that off with 4500 elite or vx series Leupold and I can't think of a better setup.
