Elk rifle.

My go-to caliber for Elk is 416 - Remington or Ruger.

.338 Win Mag in a Tikka 695 or T3 with a Swaro 2.5-10 or Leupold VXIII (or similar) in 2.5-8 or 3.5-10

My current dedicated elk rifle is an older Sako L61R in 9.3x62 with Trijicon 1-4 Accupoint.

I just acquired a Tikka M65 338 win mag and am pairing it wuth a Leupold VXIII 3.5-10 for Elk &.. .... don't write off used excellent quality guns ... many have hardly been fired like mine. The 9.3x62 is another excellent choice.

I have taken dozens of elk.Where I am hunting could determine what I take. In the southwestern part of the province elk are usually up about tree line early in the season and it takes a lot of snow and cold to move them out. There I would use a lightweight mountain type rifle in 270 plus. In the more heavily forested areas like Whitecourt through Hinton or Fox Creek it would be a different gun and in the Parkland, a mixture of fields and bush you might want a longer range rifle. Also there are elk in the grasslands and again you want to reach out but weight is not as much of a concern. The 7 mag has served well for me and has yielded better results than the 300 but I'm sure that was selecting the wrong bullet on my part. It's hard to beat the partitions or accubond. In my opinion you want a bullet that will hold together yet transfer a lot of energy to the target.

With a few extra bucks I would get a Sako Finnlite in 300 win mag and a VX3 3.5-10x40 and you will have the perfect Everything rifle!!!!

Great info, thanks y'all.

I am pretty much going between 7rm,300wm and 338wm. The area I hunt is open rolling foothills, so longer distances are fairly common.

A lot of VX3 love here, never owned one. May have to try.

A bit of skilled stalking will close up the gap pretty quick.

"Skilled stalking" sounds very noble, but that 250yd deer I spotted at dark this fall didn't give me enough time to shoot it let alone stalk it over a noisy clear cut. I'd rather have something a little more flexible than a +/-100yd gun with open sights.
