Elk rifle.

It's hard to say no to a 300 win mag for me these days....... it just makes sense..... and I am not one of those guys that has magnumitis.... I own a wide and varied collection.......

While many look down on the "magnum" crowd, I see the magnum designation as pure marketing bs....... and at the end of the day, it's a brass case with a primer and some powder with your selection of bullet....... its very hard to say the 300 win mag doesn't deliver.......
 
I've shot elk with 30-06, 8mm Rem Mag, 280 Ackley, and 338-06. Have seen them killed with 300 Win Mag, 308 Win, 6mm Rem. I usually pick up my 338-06 these days but also carry my 375 Ruger and 308 too, depends on the mood I am in or conditions. Use a good quality bullet and they'll all kill. We don't shoot very far, average distance on the six bulls I have shot is a whopping 80 yards

That m70 EW 7mm RM will be a great choice. I'd run the 145gr Barnes LRX, that's what I used in my 280 Ackley, worked great
 
I am in the process of setting up a rifle for elk as well
Went with a 300 win mag rifle and thinking on a Leupold scope with the CDS just not sure on what power to go on the scope yet
 
I've killed elk with the 270 win 7x61 S&H 300 win 300 wby 338-06 30-06 338 lapua 375 H&H 416 Rem if I had to pick one cartridge as my favourite and rifle I'd take my Kimber 84L in 30-06 and be done with it but I'm obviously a rifle loony so the madness may never end
 
have used my 325 WSM on 3 elk so far ... I can't see any other cartridge doing better .. ammo used , 200 gr AB .. I think it hammers harder than the 30-06

That was thinking a 30-06 is a smart Choice
Every Hunter should have at least one In the cabinet definitely at flexible hunting round easy to find anywhere and it don't cost you a Half a day wages for a box ammo
 
For myself it was always a .300 Win mag, lately with 210 grain Bergers. 3x9 leupold. On a Winchester model 70 all weather or a Browning Xbolt long range hunter. Many times when hunting elk, you are in grizzly country. As such a powerful, quality, reliable rifle is appreciated. As well the ability to reach out a little dose not hurt.
 
I use .338 WM Model 700, 210 Nosler Partitions. B&L Elite 4000 2x10

I think .338 or bigger is the best choice, in my experience hunting elk, grizzly were around as well. Carried a spare mag of 250 grain shoulder smashers just in case.

Also the .338 has the shorter barrel advantage without losing performance.

Stainless is also great especially in wet conditions. Cheers.
