Elk slaughter in Manitoba

These special protections and rights are just a form of nation building,

They are nothing short of racism, which divides Canadians, rather than uniting them. I don't consider turning citizens against each other to be a form of nation building.

Eventually things will balance out and this whole two-tier race system will go away,

The more racist laws that are enacted, the farther that the two-tiers are forced apart. We have been a nation for over a hundred years, and the division is growing all the time. As long as the racist laws exist , the two tier system will remain, at this point there is likely no hope of ever eliminating it.

Now it's all about cars, booze, and big TV's, which ultimately comes from greed and pride (status) - the aboriginals just didn't have these concepts.

They didn't have time to display those concepts, not because it isn't in their nature, but rather because they were too busy trying to find food to keep them alive. It was either get food or starve.

The thing I find funny is how I grew up with hundreds of aboriginals, and all the poachers I know are white guys.

Some white people are referred to as poachers, only because they have resorted to hunting like the natives. The only difference, is that the laws are different for the two races.

I'd like to know how many more "Metis" came out of the wood work after Harvestor Cards came out?
Clint

Like my father said. ''Twenty years ago someone would fight you if you called them an Indian, now everyone is fighting to be one!''

This right here...

It should be the right of the majority of Canadians to harvest for subsistence also...There were no grocery stores to buy a steak when Canada was settled, they hunted for it, and makes it part of ther heritage....

This does more to divide the nation...This is a good thing IMO...The more unrest there is, the better chance to bring about change...

The problem with that statement is that there are very few people that need to subsistence hunt anymore. Hunting may be a part of everyone's heritage (native and non-native alike), but that heritage shouldn't include the right to wipe out game stocks. Everyone seems to be fighting so hard over who has what rights to kill what animals that no one is stopping to look at the state of our widlife and the stress they're under.

Very true, but to properly manage our game populations, the people in charge need to have control of the harvest by all hunters, not just some of them.

That's the exact point I've been trying to make. The people in charge... not Band councils or the Metis Federation. The province spends lots of money on Natural Resources staff, but how can they properly manage without all the data?

Well, this Metis , who just changed his blue flag to red (rocket knows what I mean ;) )
Is sittin back chewin on some yummy deer steaks with backyard potatoes mmmmmm
Killed 2 bucks this year. Both as per the resident hunting regs in BC. Saw lots of moose, a few sheep, a few cariboo... And they were all still alive after seein me. I have my winter meat ;)
We're not all wanton killers and many of us will push for change and harsher penalties for ALL users of the resources for conservations sake.

I respect you, but there needs to be more of "you" on the news fighting against what had happened. This way it clears the "racist card" that most like to throw on the table.

My issue isn't with "you" or "him" my issue is that in the eyes of the law I am not equal to someone else and that bothers me as a contributing member of society who lives near a reserve and see the amount of non contributing members that have their hands out begging for more. There should be only 2 types of people in this country "Canadians" and "new Canadians". I'm so sick of dancing this race line we have in society and it needs to stop. My families blood is as native as canada itself yet I'm still considered a visitor in my own country...

Anyways I'm going to stop this before I get in trouble, and before snapping on me read what I said, it wasent attack on anyone who contributes to society ... And if you don't contribute to society, I hope you were offended

Couldnt agree with you more!!!

The problem lies not with the game department, but with the political party in charge. MB Conservation doesn't get nearly the funding it should and enforcement is a joke, the NDP is whittling away at that department's budget to the point where they're just a name. Regardless, as long as there are two sets of laws, game management can't exist, and no amount of money or enforcement will change that.

It is not just the NDP. The Sask Party here has done the exact same thing. We just had a lot of office closures.

Just wait till the Algonquin land claim goes through. Basically gives the natives the right to self govern 117000 acres in the Ottawa valley.. Exclusive rights to harvest and sell any and all wildlife at anytime using any methods. It says it right in the agreement that just came out last month. Think of the tractor trailer loads of wildlife you'll see coming out of the areas surrounding Algonquin park then.

"No laws were broken in the shooting of 12 elk by aboriginal hunters just after Christmas, the province said Monday.
Conservation officers determined that the hunters had permission to access the private property near Duck Mountain Provincial Park and that there was no evidence for laying charges.
However, the hunters have been asked to submit samples of the animals to test for chronic wasting disease (CWD).
The hunters have said they only took the animals they need to feed their families.
Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Gord Mackintosh said today the province will also conduct a survey of the area as soon as possible to reassess the health of its elk population.
Mackintosh is travelling to Swan River today to meet with local advisers on the matter and on what more can be done to help the province’s moose population recover. Several game hunting areas are closed to moose hunting where numbers have declined due to over hunting, winter ticks and predation.
The killing of the 12 elk in only a few minutes by First Nations hunters raised a firestorm on the Internet as video and photos of the dead animals spread in minutes.
Critics said the province has to do more research to get a better understanding of moose, elk, caribou and deer populations throughout the province and enforce sustainable hunting among all harvesters, including First Nations and Métis hunters.
Vince Crichton, a retired manager of game, fur and problem wildlife with Manitoba Conservation, said he didn’t expect charges to be laid.
Crichton said he supported a move by Mackintosh’s office to extend the province’s ban on deer and elk feeding, including baiting, to all hunters in the bovine tuberculosis and CWD surveillance zones.
The CWD zones were created in 2003 and extend to hunting areas along the province’s boundary with Saskatchewan where CWD has been detected. The bovine tuberculosis surveillance zone extends around Riding Mountain National Park.
Crichton added the province should not have to consult with First Nations on extending the zones as the move is about preventing the spread of diseases. Bovine TB has been found in Manitoba cattle in the past. CWD, a fatal neurologic disease of deer and elk, has not been detected in Manitoba.
"When it comes to disease issues, for them to have to consult with that, there seems to be a disconnect there," he said.
Mackintosh said the province has a constitutional duty to consult with First Nations on issues that impact them directly.
He said following the survey results and consultations, the government will look at legislative or regulatory changes to ensure healthy elk and deer populations."

I live in Swan River and I watched these mighty hunters drive around town and park in front of the conservation office with the elk stacked in the back of 2 trucks and a skidoo trailer. The elk where baited into the corrals of the former Duck Mountain Elk ranch by the landowner, Les Nelson, who was interviewed by the Winnipeg Free Press congratulating them on a fine hunt. Then with what happened to me on Sunday, when some fine members of our local first nations went for a snowmobile ride and chased a herd of around 50 elk off land I had permission to hunt Monday and they had no permission to be on at all, this kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

They were reported to DNR by the landowner and then to the RCMP when they tried to run him off the road. Of course DNR never got there in time to see them doing it and landowner has no witness to say they tried to run him off road. Long storey shortened, this herd has move into Sask and I get 2 more days to start looking for and hunt another herd.
