Elk slaughter in Manitoba

Living here in Manitoba and owning land near a indian reserve and the border where metis hunting rights are allowed is disgusting. They may shoot all the animals they can where they are suppose to then just go on private land and shoot off the road without permission wjth no problem. No respect for land owners at all and a lot of it at night too. You can call Natural Rescourses all you want they do what they can but the courts will probably do nothing. This is the truth.

This incident is somewhat disturbing. As some mentioned before (ie. communication with your local MPs - Federal or MLAs - Provincial), I supposed there is nothing wrong with that. But remember this, the political wheel turns very slow when it comes down to these issues.

In fact, in my previous employment position which I retired from 3 years ago, I often discussed many issues with our local MP. He says it best: Any strong discussions at the Federal Government level in regards to these aboriginal hunting issues...and others are "Political Suicide". That my friends says it all.

Is it frustrating? You bet it is!

For the record, Metis in Alberta are allowed to hunt without a license if they are within 160 kms ( look at it as a circle) of their colony. Beyond that, they are required to buy tags like the rest of us ( ie. non treaties). Guess their rules are different...for now.

There is no limit of amount of animals that can be taken by treaty or metis here by gov.. The tag system that the meits have is not enforcable. This could lead to over harvest. Maybe this will be like Africa where there is game farms pay to hunt and poachers possibly shot. Then maybe the gov. will do something.

The Manitoba Metis laws of the hunt is a hilarious read...Their "tag" system is a joke and as noted above has no provisions for enforcement or violations...

sustinance hunt as your ancesters did many moons ago. no sleds, atvs, vehicles, none of that gear should be allowed. PATHETIC

That unfortunately is what most Treaty hunters fail to realize. When these treaties were signed there was no modern technology and hunting was hard. In today's modern world of technology the animal population cannot withstand this type of year round onslaught. With the use of 4x4's, Atv's and snowmobiles there are no safe havens left. Hunting seasons and bag limits were set to protect the stocks, now it just seems to be a free for all out there. Hopefully the powers that be from all sides can work out an equitable harvest system before it's all gone.

So if a farmer wants to get rid of the Elk in his Hayfield he can legally phone up some natives to dispose of them?

Depends on the province...In Ontario, natives can only hunt without a license on their treaty lands/waters. Anything outside that they need a license and tags just like everybody else.

I have no issue with true sustinance hunting, where its on an only take what you will use, and nothing is wasted...When you factor in pork, beef, and poultry, the amount of wild game/fish that can actually be consumed shouldn't be that great...A very small percentage eat ''that much'' wild game, and thats the way the harvesting should take place...

Not true.....Permission can be granted by other first nations, where a license is not needed...

My occupation takes me onto MB reservations from time to time. I wonder what my employer or people of the reservations would say if I refused to go onto the reservations on service calls? Maybe I will just have to boycott.

Keepers of the land, I have seen animals that have been wasted to feed ones dogs on reservations and waste of the carcasses. Just hind quarters used and dogs dragging the rest of the carcass and eating. Keepers of the land, take a drive around and see how they care for the land.

This BS has to stop. They need to become accountable. How long are we as a society going to be able to give and give? We are soon to be in the minority.

I've seen alot of that...I know MANY people myself who who do this...My father has alot of people giving him quarters of venison from the previous season, froze out fish, ducks, and small game for trapline bait...A few of these people are native, most aren't...Wasting is not just a native issue, its a bit more wide spread than that...Easy to point out though...Everyone knows someone who does this...Say you don't!

Captonian yes I will not deny that there are non First Nations who do this. Those people should be banned for life from hunting as far as I am concerned. The sad part is we do not have the people in place anymore to patrol and enforce the laws. The MB gov has cut back to where there is NO one patrolling and looking out for the wildlife. It is going to be a very sad situation sooner than later. It is amazing how brain dead people are over a 40.00 hunting license for a stinky whitetail.

My dog gets the ribs every year, he loves em. Everyone has had game meat (for whatever reason) spoil or otherwise become inedible. Freezer burn, power outage, discovery of parasites...it happens. The whole point is to make use of the meat, not throw it away. Use it as yote bait, bear bait, dog food...I really have no problem with it as long as it was accidental.
