Hi all
I may have the oppertunity to hunt elk this fall.
Now I have the 30/06 which I know will take elk with no problem.
But then I absolutely love my 7x57 now I know that it will take moose but I heard that elk are purty tough. I have a hard time deciding which to use.
If I take the 7x57 I'll be loading it with 160gr nostler partitions.
What do you think
Help this Boer decide
thanks

I took this bull with a 7-08AI and 140gr XLC, and he went a few yards.

the 160gr Partition will be deadly... and the 140gr TSX equally so. Put one in the vitals and get your skinning knife out!

The 7x57 will do a great job on elk with the load you have chosen. Fire away!....Eleanor O'Connor shot many elk as well as most antlered/horned African game with her 7x57 so why not.

7x57

I think a 7X57 will do the job on any big game animal in North America.

The only problem with some factory 7X57, some manufacturers down loaded because of the older guns. I wouldn't want to put a high pressure round in my Remington Rolling block, or my Spanish 95's. I wouldn't think twice about putting a good load through my 1908 Brazilian. I had a problem with rounds in my custom built 7mm, there was carbon around the neck of the cases after firing it scared the crap out of me. A custom 7X57 and when that started I thought, "dam I have a dud". I talked to my gunsmith and he asked if the rounds I was using were European manufactured, and pointed out there wasn't enough pressure created to seal around the neck when I fired the gun. I tried Remington and Winchester ammo and no problems. I just got a Remington 700 BDL rebarreled from 6mm to 7-08 and I can't wait to shoot it. I just like 7mm Mauser and 7-08 for hunting. I have a new stainless 24" 7-08 barrel sitting on my shelf ready to install on a future Remington project.

I would reload my ammo for the hunt if I were you, but there are enough experienced people here to correct me if I am wrong.

I am thinking about reloading my ammo but I never got around to it.
I probably had enough equipment to reload 20,000 rounds of 223, 308, 7mm, 30-30, 270, 38, 45 ACP, and you name it I probably had it. I did have powder, but I just sold it off with 30,000 primers because I have never loaded a round in my life. I will just get someone to teach me to reload my ammo and go from there.

Good Hunting

7x57

I reload for my dads 7x57 mountain Rifle and the combo of 140 gr Nosler partition , 49gr of IMR 4350 and good shot placement will take elk reliably out to 250 yards or so. With thgis combo he has taken Moose bear Elk Sheep Antelope Muleys Whiteys and Coyotes and Caribou. thats enough endorsement of a 110 year old cartridge and a good bullet.

My first bull with my Brno 21H in 7x57. 542lbs gutted and skinned on the butchers scale.
F1000007.jpg

Used 145gr Grand slams.
200yards broadside, bullet stopped under the hide on the off side.
I am working up a load with the 154gr Interbond this year to help flatten out the trajectory and get a more accurate load going. She will be going for big Bullwinkles this fall if we get drawn.
It is a real nice caliber to shoot, and therefore the shot placement is better, in my short time with it anyway.
With a 160gr pill, your 275 Rigby is ready for most anything on this continent.

Okay gentleman, now I am going to experement a little more with my loads.
I have the following in mind H414 with 140 and 160 gr bullets.
Varget with the same bullets what els did you have success with in this cal.
How many grains etc.
I am trying to cut a little on development time as I have been working my but off as of late.

I believe I have shot 3 elk with the 7x57. All were 1 shot kills, closest at 80 yards, farthest at 270. All were shot with the 160 Partition and a healthy load of Norma MRP. [you may want to try Reloder 22] I did not recover any bullets, all were passthroughs. There is no magic with the 7x57 [or 7-08] They are usually accurate and pleasant to shoot, which makes them great in the field. I found that I could get right around 2750 or so with the 160 in 3 different rifles, all with 22" tubes, and that is plenty tough elk medicine, as long as the bullet is placed properly. Take that 7x57 and go elk hunting, Oh, and BTW, enjoy eating your elk steaks!!! :D Eagleye.

Boer seun, which Mauser action is your 7X57 built on? That will make quite a difference as to how stout it can be loaded.

Loading 160 gr partitions ahead of 45 gr of 4350 will give you well over 2500 fps with mild pressures suitable for the Model 93/95 mauser action. This will still be adequate for elk, but in a Model 98 (or Model 70, Ruger 77, CZ or some similar strong action) you can easily get another 150 fps.

Ted

Edited to add the same as Eagleye, "Enjoy the elk steaks!" :D

assuming you can shoot it well, a 160 gr. Partition @ 2600-2700 fps should work pretty damn well on elk I'd think, inside the ranges elk are normally shot. 250yards or in

It's a 98 action.
Shot some max loads out of her and could not find any signs of high pressure. So will see. Thanks for the data

You guys with your pix are depressing the S**t out of me.
We have no Elk in Ontario (that we can hunt)

If I could afford an Elk Hunt I would have no problem taking my 7x57.
