Embracing my Fudd Heritage

Lots of mags available at most of the mainstream guns stores. Shouldn't be a problem.

Nice post and make sure you share your fall hunt with us.

Don't let your paying customers touch that thing! You might inadvertently wind up starting a revival! ;)

But seriously Clarke, I share your melancholy - I felt the same way when my 82 year old father-in-law presented me with his 30-30 Winchester, which was built right across the street from where they lived back in the day.
He took many a Whitetail in Maine and Connecticut with it.....

Mags for pump rifles will work in the semis as well but dont have the last shot bolt hold open thingy.

Be careful buying used mags for these rifles. Old/worn mags sometimes dont seat properly and will cause feeding problems. The little tabs on the ends of the mag that hold it in place get rounded off.

Yup, I guess the corelokts predate the partition by almost 10 years. But I don't have any. :)
I have 4 boxes you can have, if you were closer, Clarke.
I got them with a Ruger M77 I bought for the scope. It came with 1 3/4 boxes of 150gn, 2+ boxes of 165gn, and 1 box of 180gn. I had to use that rifle in an emergency (mine broke an extractor), so I checked it with 165gn. It was perfectly sighted. Went after my moose. First time hunting with CoreLokts. Poor bulletproof performance. 3 shots to knock her down and the only one to expand was in the shoulder, and it didn't even go all the way through that. The next year, huge buck. Tracked him for 4 hours only to watch him expire 20' in front of me at 9PM (no gun then). Again, no expansion. Perfect broadside shot, hit a rib, deflected fwd, pencilled through on-side lung, expanded on off-side shoulder and shoulder fragments took out off-side lung as the bullet kept going. No more for me. I have better results with old cup and core.
The guy selling it went to a .300WM, because he wasn't impressed with the '06 performance. Not the '06, it was those bullets. But, they are yours if you want them. Shipping cost only.

Keep the chamber clean, pitting is a major cause of jam-o-matic. There is a special chamber brush for these rifles.
Mags were also a known issue, easy to ding.
Most are surprisingly accurate, and light to pack around. Alas the last two through my hands, second hand, were inconsistent jamming ^$$$^.

I just had the displeasure of cleaning my uncle-in-law's Model 742 a few days ago. They are gorgeous rifles, and a pleasure to shoot.. but it had the worst break down of anything I've ever touched. Hopefully yours won't require the special tool, and if it does.. vice grips are a crude last resort.

All that aside, she's a beauty. Congrats!

Personally I stick with Remington factory loads in my old 742's. The old semi's are a little fussy regarding overall cartridge length and max loads are not recommended. A friend uninformed about such things tried a box of the old Hornady Light Magnum in his .30/06 742 and the cases stuck in the chamber. He didn't read the box which stated FOR USE IN BOLT ACTION AND SINGLE SHOT RIFLES ONLY.

ha ha this is awesome. Gate you need to find a red checkered Mackinaw.. if you can find one in ###L Sasquatch ;) Partitions, by all means that's certainly fitting for the era of Fuddness. I've got the same scope and rings (off grandpa's ot 6 beauty old Husqy) although I've set the tip off Weavers and the K 2.5 to the side and put more glass on it. I hope your man enough to keep yours on that rifle  180 grain soft points a thermos of coffee and some roast beef and onion sandwiches with a slice of pickle and you pal are ready for a day in the field, old school! Good schtuff. Might be cool to visit pops one day and tell him about a successful hunt with the ol semi auto, maybe with a nice fresh venison or moose steak to liven up the tale. epic

Nice bit o' nostalgia there !

Yep, a spotless chamber & factory Core-lokt 180 round noses. Good moose medicine.

You'll be surprised how well those Weaver mounts will return to zero if/when you roll them over. Had them on a 7600 in 35 Whelen for years with a Weaver V3 (1x-3x). Never had to resort to the irons, but checked them form time to time. Good reliable set-up ... not expensive & sturdy.

Watch the old magazines when you find them ... a lot of guys used to "bang" them home, rounding over the magazine latch lip.
