Hello CGN dudes,

New to the M1A/M305 and need some advice on what spare parts to get for my M305.

Here's the scenario: I have invested a significant amount of money into a hunting trip. My hunting camp is a long ways away from civilization, and my M305 fails on me just at the most inopportune time. My trip is a disaster!

Question: In order to prevent the above from happening, what spare parts would be useful to take up with me so that I can field repair my Norinco M305 and get back to hunting? I don't have any experience with this firearm and need information on which part, or parts, are most likely to wear out and fail me when I will need it most. On a side note, if anyone knows a good source of USGI spec parts up here in Canada, it would be most appreciated.

I've cycled hundreds of rounds through my M305S, and have never had any major issues . I'm taking it out hunting next week, and have complete confidence in this rifle.

Most people who invest a lot of money in this scenario also bring along a back-up rifle c/w scope in the event of problems with the first.

Garand/M14 types are very durable. A replacement firing pin in good to have. Keep a spare ejector/spring, extractor, and extractor spring/plunger on hand in case they get lost when stripping/assembling bolt.

Thank you for your insight on what parts may fail on me.

To some who would just buy another rifle, theres nothing wrong with that. There's more than 1 way to do things, that's for sure. However for me, my philosophy is quite different. Instead of spending money on another rifle, I would rather invest money into the rifle I already have (ie; upgrading the op rod), and make it a more reliable and durable shooter. Also loadout is very important to me and I don't want to lug around two rifles. I apologize for not making this more clear when I started the thread.

I can't seem to find any USGI parts, so I am looking for Smith Enterprise (SEI), Sadlak, or Fulton upgrade parts. From what I can tell, I have read that the above manufacturers produce reliable next gen parts for the M14.
I've ordered a Sadlak Industries op rod spring guide to help improve cycling. I am guessing that most replacement parts are interchangeable between the M14/M305/M1A. Can someone point me to a good quality op rod spring? Are the Wolf extra power springs anygood? Does anyone have good sources for quality USGI spec parts in Canada? Don't like to be hassled with importation risks/proceedures.

Buy a whole set of bolt internals from 762mmfirearms.com in Ohio, that's all I keep for spare parts when the M14 was my go-to platform during my NRA High Power days! That is really all I carried, except for the combo tool and a take down cleaning rod for emergencies that never showed up.

Springs? The Wolff springs from Brownells should be good to go, but with that 'extra power', I'm not so sure. I just used the issue springs over all these years!

Just keep your M14 greased before you leave for the trip and that grease application will last your entire hunt (more than a couple of weeks? that grease will stay put).

That being said, I would bring both my M14 Norc 2009 and a Rem M700 in .308 as a backup! Same ammo and you are good to go should the zombies invade the hunt camp!

Cheers mates!
