So the mailman just dropped in with my antique S&W model 3 (double action, .44 russian/.44 special)
And I noticed from handling It's got a fair amount of endshake (up to 1mm-1.5mm might be overestimating here) I was assured it would be safe to fire (the timing seems fine)

Is this something I should be concerned about?

As long as the timing and lockup are still good it isn't a problem. If it affects the timing or lockup then it should be repaired. I'm not overly familiar with that model, but in a lot of revolvers adding a thin washer can correct the end shake quite easily.
