I now have a few pounds of each of these here.

While I am perfectly capable of developing loads with them, I just thought
I would throw out a "feeler" to see if anyone has used them, and if so, how did they work?

My intent is to try them in 7SAUM, 30-06, 308 Norma Mag, 338 Win Mag, plus a couple of others.

Regards, Dave.

I worked up a load using 160 gr partitions and with 57gr of 7977 for a velocity of 2850fps for my 280 Rem. This was the most accurate load but it pushed 3000 fps at maximum loads (according to the Hodgdon site) with no signs of pressure. The stuff was pricy but seemed a near ideal powder for this case capacity and bullet weight.

What are the burn rates, I've not heard of them?

Burn Rate of IMR 4451 is supposed to be near IMR 4350, and IMR 7977 is not far from IMR 7828.....but, they claim Copper fouling elimination and Temperature insensitivity.

Just for the record, unless I am in a competition, the temp sensitivity is a non-issue to me. However, The CFE intrigues me.

Regards, Dave.

Hey Dave, I just was wondering if you had a chance to test out the 7977 yet? I just bought an 8lbs jug intended for my 300 wby.

Sorry, nothing to share yet. I have been busy....big 1000 yard shoot in BL on the weekend, much going on ATM.

Did load up some 4461 in my 338 behind the 210 partition....worked up to 69.5 grains....no excess pressure signs, and 1 moa, so some promise there.
I did not bring the 'graph with me, so do not know velocity, but that is next.

I want to try the 7977 in my 308 Norma Mag, and the 6.5x55AI, possibly in the 270 as well. Maybe in a couple of weeks.

Regards, Dave.

how are they for price compared to the more traditional stuff ?

I bought 8 pounders from Higginsons, and had another shooter in the mix with me.
We shared the Dangerous goods charge, and Higginsons paid the shipping on the 28 lb total.
With taxes and the DGR, it worked out to right at $33.00/lb, landed at my door.

Regards, Dave.

The "Safety Police" will tell you to wait until there's published data, but here's what I'd do:

Hodgdon puts 4451 right between IMR4350 and H4350, so I'd start at IMR4350 starting loads and run parallel loads with one of the 4350's as a sanity check.

Hodgdon puts 7977 between IMR7828 and H1000, so same routine different powders.

Saw the new Enduron powders in Regina today. I was going to buy some of the 4166 as it is supposed to be the right burn rate for .308, but there is so little information on it right now; and so little of that info is for semi auto's too.

I have some good result with the IMR4451 in my 308win F/TR rifle and 215gr Berger Hybrid I am still in load developement but it's look quite good
today I got a 3 shot group @ .358MOA with very small SD (2673/2673/2668fps) about 1gr before max load and I still have to play with bullet sitting
will post pics after final test

condition were quite good for testing at 200yds today 30degC with a max of 5mph wind and very small mirage

I just tried some IMR7977 with 225 grain bullets in my 338 RUM, there is data for it on the Hodgdon load data site and many other calibers too. So far 1 grain below maximum seems best with a velocity just over 3000 fps but further load development will let me know for sure. I went up to the maximum published load of 100.2 grains and thought there was no sign of pressure upon ejection there was a scuff on the base of the brass where the ejector was on the 100.2 and 99.7 grain loads. Since this is a hunting rifle and I want to load rounds in the magazine there isn't much room to play with for seating length of the bullet.

So, I finally got a chance to shoot some of that IMR 7977 in one of my Norma Magnums. [24" barrel]

I used the old standby, the 180 Partition, and started at 75 grains. [Norma case, CIL 8½M primer]
This load yielded just 2900 fps across the Chronograph. 3 shot accuracy......1.25moa.

The 76 grain load made 2975 average, and the accuracy was similar to the 75 grain load.

The 77 grain load was averaging 3050, and shot exactly 1 moa. Primers looked flatter, but extraction was fine and no diameter increase across the belt.

May stay there, but am curious what 78 grains will do. Regards, Dave.
