I've been searching through the threads for loaders that have used this line in the field, specifically for the -08.

My inexperience in supply of reloading components has lead me to miss the boat on supply of Varget in the usual spots in Saskatoon. :slap: Just trying to get out shooting with my son for fire forming and trying other pills to keep his interest up until we get Varget. I don't have enough experience to know the temperature insensitivity card yet but Varget from summer to minus 30 c white tail season requires just a few clicks to adjust POI for the ranges we hunt at.

I ve read some loads from Kelly, H4831 and some good information from Dogleg, HomeTownHero and EagleEye. H4350 and IMR 4064 seem to provide good results. H4350 is also in short supply here in Saskatoon. :slap:

Anyone tried the IMR 4166?

(My fear is that Varget may not be available in sufficient time to develop loads for anticipated Accubonds.)

Of note
- my son and I both shoot 7mm-08 Savage rifles
- 2nd year of reloading

Regards
Ron

For 7-08 I use H414 for max velocity...I chronographed my load at book speed with book charge, THAT'S A FIRST! 5 group average was 1MOA

I get best accuracy with RL-15, not top speeds. H4895 is good but we save it for low recoil loads.

My friends best results are of course with the powders you are having a hard time sourcing H4350 and Varget.

I shoot a Rem700 1in9.25" twist 22"bbl
He shoots an X-bolt (I don't know the twist) 22" bbl
2 of his kids are shooting Tikka's 1in9.5" twist 22"bbl
All 7-08 of course.

Good Luck,

Willy

Those results are also mine experience regarding the most speed and best accuracy.
I use surplus H414 slow lot in mine LH Ruger 7-08 with 150gr Rem CL bullets, 21" long Sako barrel with 11" twist.

There are some definite repeats of tested powder favourites. Thanks for the reply Gunrunner.

Try 4451 in it. Suppose to be very good. If it wasn't over $55 a pound I would pick some up. Last time wholesale had h4350 I bought the last 3 they had. I use it in two 30-06 and soon to be two 7mm-08's. Doesn't last long around my place.

i just bought a savage 7-08 for my son, not sure of twist, has anyone had luck with h4350 and 120 gr bullets, his first year hunting and want something a little lighter on the recoil for him.

IMO you would benefit in loading down a heavier bullet, even slower it looses less as it travels.

Use your H4350 with a 139/140 - 150 gr projectile , do your testing, the minimum or just below the minimum start loads will be very gentle and still be adequate for game.

A less stout bullet a conventional cup and core bullet will work well for this and also be a nice practice load and also be less expensive as these projectiles aren't really too pricey, a regular pointed soft point will do well.Hornady interlock would be one,Sierra has 140 and 150 in Game king and pro hunter.

Typically those lighter bullets like to be pushed fast and close to maximum load for what they were intended(ballistic tips, barnes , etc...)
