Did anyone else get a chance to watch "Enemy at the Gates" on the History channel Friday night? I have only ever seen bits of it, so it was a treat to sit & watch the whole movie. I had just sat down & was examining my newest acquisition, a RC 98K, when the movie started. It was a little eerie watching this movie while holding a weapon that may have participated in the battle of Stalingrad. Good movie on WWII snipers.

Great movie - Lousy history

The movie was very far from what is established as historical fact - and the historical fact is a result of propoganda and is very far from what happened. Read "War Of The Rats" - much better story. :sniper:

I agree and to be honest Enemy at the Gates bugged me almost as much as Flyboys (Really? EVERY German pilot was the Red Baron? *sigh*)

That said, ignoring the factual errors, Enemy at the Gates gives a great feel for the state of Stalingrad at that time... Really nice set & FX work.

You'll love your new Mauser! Now you just need to get a Mosin Nagant to balance it out!

Absolutely entertaining movie, although obviously flawed with regards to accuracy. For example, Russian soldiers were not known to talk amongst themselves exclusively in English, with British accents. As far as I know, they spoke mostly Russian. You've got to make allowances so they can get on with the story, otherwise we'd have to read subtitles for the whole show.

If you want historical facts, read something like Anthony Beevor's "Stalingrad". Then shut up and enjoy the movie.

Great movie to sit back with the Mosin and a cleaning rag...maybe even attach the bayo....(at a safe distance from the Tv. , wife , dog , ect...)

History Channel also has excellent documentaries that will be more factual for those who "need" to know.

Well the story of the movie was <pretty close> to a small portion of the book with the same title .... The sniper vs sniper incident was never AFAIK established as historical fact thru historial records (although it is told in the book), but the rest seems to be pretty accurate.

On a recent history channel documentary I saw (last week?), they were interviewing the real Vassili Zaitsev. He was talking about how "one time" he took out a certain German sniper that was later discovered to be the head of the sniping school.

So obviously, Hollywood has given the story some license for entertainment purposes. I was certainly entertained by the sight of Rachel Weisz's lily white ass!

I just put a hold on "War of the Rats". Looking forward to the read.

Does anyone have the German movie Stalingrad? Been looking to get that on DVD for a long time.

Done and Done.

Never trust Hollywood for historical accuracy... just sit back and be entertained. To ##### about the accuracy is just a waste of time.
