Enfield 1862 (need info)

i have a Enfield 1862 looks like it was modified to take a .577 shell and has beautiful carvings on both sides of butt stock, and on the forestock where i beleave there should be a ramrod. i have know idea about these old guns and would like some information on it. i have pictures but i can only send through e-mail , if you have any info please reply and i will send you the pic's if need be.

I think you may be describing a Snider conversion Enfield, which was the British empires first breach loading cartridge arm.

They were used all over the British Empire including in Canada -actually Canada used them right up until before ww1 when they were replaced -, generally the design was copied by nearly every country in some form....

They would be a common military arm until the ww1 period which is a really exceptional service record.

Josh- Those "beautiful carvings" represent Bubba's handiwork...I'm sure Bubba thought they were nice but they destroyed the originality of this Snider.
 
Bubba had some carving skill!

Looks like a mk 2 Canadian military snider, cut down and fancied up.

I say strip her down, clean her up and use her.

Value.....maybe 250-400$$.......If the carver was someone special, then of course the rifle would be worth more.


I like the carvings! Very tasteful.

hey thanks for posting the pic's Musketfire. and the info. i think Bubba was a furnature maker i have a rocking chair with close to the same carvings on the backrest
 
Okay, so the originality is gone.

It's no longer in 'issue' condition.

It can still be shot, and Sniders are an absolute BALL of fun to shoot with.

And those carvings ARE very, very nice.

What happened was that somebody with a lot of talent bought a surplus Snider, likely for $1.50 or some other huge sum, too it home, made it into a sporter and then personalised it. That stock is now art. Ain't original, but it's still art.

I would be proud to possess such a 'spoiled' rifle.
