Enfield buttstock problem

Hey all!

Just got a 1944 Enfield. It was shipped with the bolt and but stock removed. I got the bolt installed easily enough but the buttstock seems impossible. The only thing I can seem to do is kind of pop it into the rest of the stock but it is super loose and wiggles. I'm obviously a big news but surely there a way to make it stay on tightly.

Just to clarify, you tightened the big bolt in the but stock all the way down?

Is is a No.1 or a No.4? Some N0.1 enfields had a square tip on the stock bolts which lined up with a groove in the forestock.

You have to remove the forstock first, then install the butt. Make sure the bolt sticking through is square so it fits into the square metal spot in the rear of the stock. It locks into place.
Many stocks get split this way, not removing the forestock first.

Check if you have cross threaded the receiver. There should also be an approx 1/4" thick washer on the bolt. Check if that's missing.

It's a No.4 Mk. 1

I'm gonna post pics tomorrow. Seems impossible to do from my phone.

Thanks for the advice though! I've (possibly) made progress and may be able to solve the problem with a quick trip to buy a long long screwdriver.

The long screwdriver is a must although some people made due with a good old fashioned tire iron. Do you have the butt stock washer? On a No. 4 It will be a spiral. If so and after tightening it up it still wiggles try this.Take some brown paper (like from a paper bag )and coat it with glue and wrap it around the portion of your butt that fits in the butt socket. It usually only takes a wrap or two, work out all air bubbles and let it dry.tap it in and securely fasten with the stock bolt.

The long screw driver is a 12" screw driver you buy in Crappy Tire. There might be a leather piece in the hole that needs to come out. Use a length of wire coat hanger with a wee pointy bend on it. Assuming you have or can find a wire coat hanger. Anything like one will do(not due). Leather thingy is there to quiet the oiler and cleaning rod.
The butt stock must be a No. 4 Rifle butt stock and the correct length for you. Too short and it'll hurt to shoot(only after you have the headspace checked). Too long and you won't be able to get a proper sight picture.

This is my Enfield buttstock screwdriver (link broken at the "www"):

Awesome! Mine has the long metal piece and it appears to have the washer. The front is square looking though.

I'm gonna try the tire iron method tonight after work if I cant find an appropriate length screwdriver.

Thanks for all the help everyone! Gotta say that having more experienced and knowledgeable people like you has made my progress as a new firearms owner much smoother and enjoyable!

should I still try and screw it in with either the long screwdriver or tire iron?
No, we need to sure of what you have, the square end will "bottom out" on the forend but i think you have a No 1 butt.
I cant be much help until i get hm from work which is still 7hrs away.

It really looks like a No1 butt. I've made a No4 butt work on a No1 but never tried the reverse.

5th, if you use a little heat and bend the end of your tire iron to 90* and then grind the tip to a tight fitting parallel sided screwdriver it will be easier to use and you will be much less likely to strip the bolt head. Other than that, perfect tool for the job!

Already ground the blade for a better fit, have thought about bending it but as it seems to work fine as it is i have not bothered but thanks for the tip any way.;)

Like flying pig and others say that is a No1 butt with a No1 stock bolt.

The bolt is designed to fit into a notched backstrap across the base of a No1 fore end. The filled in disc hole on the left side of the butt is a dead give away. The square bolt face is also a give away.

The No1 butt was intended to be installed before the fore end and have the bolt tightened with a partial turn to fit into the slot on the fore end which was intended to stop the bolt from backing off. The No4 rifle you have doesn't have the notch in the reinforcing strap. This means you have to grind off the square tip of your bolt or get a proper No4 bolt to replace it. The extension into the butt socket on the receiver may not fit properly as well. Tradex, a banner sponsor has some new No4 butt stocks that will fit your rifle properly.
