enfield conversion project

Allright I have several bubba's that are just too badly chopped and modified for restoration. So If I'm going to get a new barrel twisted on I'm going to do something different.

2 projects come to mind, please comment

Project 1:

303/357 wildcat, 20" barrel, iron sights. This would be a truck gun for close in work. Perhaps go with an AI 303 as a base for this gun.


Project 2:

conversion to 22-250 full lenght barrel, and re stock with full military stock. A little surprise for those millsurp shoots

main quuestion is how much more work is going to be involved in getting the 22-250 case to work. Its not rimmed but then again my DCRA 308 enfield has the same bolt head as my 303 enfields. Mag is another interesting problem, it will need to be reworked to get the shorter rounds to feed, perhaps a single stack insert would be easiest.

what do the experts think

I'm far from an expert, a Stevens would definiately be the cheaper option. But there is that "Cool" factor in coming up with a project this and then being able to follow through!

On Project 2, would .223 be easier to work with???

stay with .303 based cartridge to avoid extractor/feed issues. A maynard project would be cool.

Have a look at the AIA M10 bolt head... it will tread right onto your bolt bodies and solve your extraction and ejection issues with rimless shells. Making it work with the barrel might take a little more work.

Is it worth it to have a 22-250 you can't load to full potential? I have one converted to 223 .It uses winchester white box with no problems.I use it as a single shot but an AR mag can be made to feed.bolt face is fine.for an extractor I used one from an Enfield rimfire trainer bolt head.It will eject on the old screw.

Why not .225 Winchester or .22-303 I think Epps did this one . Still give you that surprize factor, both are rimmed cases and should feed from stock mags.

"...my DCRA 308 enfield has the same bolt head as my 303 enfields..." You'll likely find it has been modified. The extractor goes in farther to catch the rim.
The trick will be finding a barrel. Don't forget you'll need a barrel vise and an action wrench or you'll twist the action into a slick paperweight.

There is a 308 extractor for the #4 bolt head, it pushes the case over further to get it to hit the ejector screw or the ejector lip in the case of the enfield 308 mags.
