Is there an effective way to rewrite the model and serial numbers on a No4 Mk1 mine is a sporter and the writing is very light and hard to see. I plan on restoring the military furniture eventually although i think mine is mismatched parts to begin with, will modifying these numbers decrease its value much? It is a M/47C were most of the rifles from this factory finished this poorly?

Thanks

Theres tons of great links out there that will tell you lots about you Enfield. I too have an enfield with mismatched serial numbers. However as long as its a good shooter I'm not concerned with serial numbers. However if I was a collector it would be a different story.

Just to clarify i don't mean to force match anything i just would like to make the markings deeper and easier to read, i don't know if someone rewrote them since the factory but they are messy are very difficult to see.

If it was sporterized by a factory, such as Parker Hale, they sometimes polished the receivers and faded the markings significantly. Not sure if that's what the case is here, but if it is then I would say having it re-engraved would be okay, but probably not worth the money. BUT - if the rifle was just stamped poorly then you should leave it as original because yes it would devalue it. Is it just the serial numbers or all the markings that are hardly visible?

The model number is hardly visible but is neatly done, the serial number is hardly visible and looks really messy i wouldn't think the factory would produce it the way it is, it looks like a 4 year old wrote it on. The proof stamps are all very deep and easy to see.

Well, even with pictures I'm not sure I would be able to tell you with any certainty, but someone on here might be able to. I've seen quite a few enfields with sloppy stamps, the factory ladies must have been sneaking some gin on the job.

Yeah, I've seen many Enfields with hard-to-see stamps. I've even had to use a dissecting microscope at times, no kidding! I wouldn't try to restamp them though.

haha alright i guess i should leave it if its possibly original i don't want to bubba it more then it already is.
