Hey guys,

I could use a little help from the Enfield experts. :)

I bought a Mk 4 No 1/2 without wood and I'm trying to determine the correct forestock for it.

I'm assuming it would take a Mk4 No 1 forestock but just wanted to confirm that they didn't change it when it went back to the factory for the /2 upgrades.

Thanks

It will NOT take a No4Mk1 forend without surgery to the wood. You need a Mk2 forend
The Trigger, being hung on the reciever, prevents the Mk1 forend from fitting because of the rivited in backstrap which would foul the trigger mounting bracket. The Mk2 forend is held together at the back end by a screw and nut which must be removed to attach it to the rifle. and is slotted to clear the trigger mounting bracket.

John's right. Look on ebay for a complete No 4 Mk 2 woodset which go through frequently, or call Springfield Sporters. Get a matching set of wood if you can. While you're at it make sure you have all the bands, screws etc.

If you get a complete Mk2 woodset it will have a buttstock that doesn't fit your Mk1/2. The shape of the socket where the buttstock plugs in is different. But it could be carved to fit the Mk 1 socket.

That's news to me. A No1 buttstock would require some minor alteration, but I seriously doubt that one for a No4, whatever mark, would need that. They altered the trigger, NOT the butt socket.

Hey,

John, thanks for the info. Good thing I didn't buy the Mk 1 forestock. :D
The Mk 2 forestocks are easier to come by anyway.

As for the buttstock, I thought they were the same. I bought a couple NOS long versions so they will need a bit of fitting anyway.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Off to eBay.

Of course I haven't examined all the No.4s in the world, but am citing my own experience.

I have a No4.Mk2 (ROF Faz. 1954) and had a No5. also from ROF Faz 1947, and the butt stock/sockets are the same as each other, but a No4.Mk1* (LongBranch 1943) I compared them with was different.

I have made an assumption about the Mark, but perhaps it is factory specific?

They all fit into each other, some rifles will require some fitting of the buttstock but it's usually a few thousandths at most. The different buttstocks can look a bit different at the front but they usually all fit.

Yes and it is a nice looking rifle, :D that now has a place in my vault along with all my other enfields.

as for the butt sockets, all the No4 series rifles in my experience are the same. However I think there was some variation in the butt socket on the C No7 and a C No7 but will not fit on a No4 without a bit of work.

I got a cheap Mk2 forend from Numrich... bad shape but cheap, and after some work it looks good now. I used the butt that came with the rifle when I got is as a bubba. Springfield Sporters could be ok too if they have it in stock. Finally, too bad I sold my complete Mk2 kit in the EE section a couple of weeks ago! The kits I got came from Sarco Inc. Took forever to get them, and I ordered Mk1's and got the Mk2's... you could take a look over there if you can speak to someone about "international orders" - about $40 a complete kit plus delivery...

Cheers!

Lou
