Enfield P-14 fail to feed problem

My trusty P-14 has developed a problem. Even if the rounds are carefully loaded, (with the rim of each cartridge ahead of the round below) the rounds seem to jump around in the magazine well after I take a shot. This means that the next cartridge in line for loading ends up with it's rim stuck behind the round below. This prevents the bolt from being able to push the next round into the chamber as the rim of the round that should be chambered is caught on the rim of the round below.

Could this be caused by the spring in the magazine well loosing it's strength? I'm in Ottawa but Jason Spencer is off hunting and his shop is closed for a while so I figured I would ask you guys.

Unfortunately my gun was one of the ones sold by the Crown to BSA after 1945 and turned into a cheap hunting rifle. I think they called it the "B" conversion with the barrel amputated, the ears ground off and the original stock shortened in the front. I can't turn back the clock on the rifle and make it whole again but it does remain a very nicely (it's a Winchester built) put together rifle from the time before C&C machines.

Thank you for your help.

Denis

BSA ground the receiver rails on those guns - sometimes for better, sometimes for worse, as far as feeding goes. I've has similar issues and swapped the spring with one from another rifle. Also had success by swapping out the follower (BSA also modified these) Be careful if you play with the follower, they were different amongst the makers of P-14s.
Try stretching and repositioning the spring (it can move about 1/2 inch, forward and backward) Move it backward...
