Enfield safety lever

I recently acquired a heavily sporterized Enfield No4 Mk2. It had a fair bit of rust in the action area, so bad the safety was completely seized and I had to use a punch to knock it free from the receiver. Anyways I dug through my parts bin and found some safeties I bought years ago of eBay (10+) of them. But they are clearly different and show some wear so they were installed in something in the past. There is no threading for the safety catch. But will still fit in a Enfield receiver.

Any idea what this safety was used for?

These are "war expedient" and have no helix spline on them. There are other components that were manufactured as well where time consuming details were eliminated however still functional.
