I was pretty sure I saw an Enfield in the picture thread with a very nice one piece sporter stock where the band at the trigger (not sure what it's called) was either covered or removed. I'd was hoping to find it back, ring any bells?

saw one like that, many years ago; fellow in vancouver made it up.

BTW, the butt socket is properly termed the "butt socket".
Not being sarcastic; I had a heckuvva time remembering it myself, once upon a time.

Also in vancouver, many years ago, saw one with 1-pce stock, bipod and Bren magazine, plus flash-hider. Nasty looking critter! MUCH prefer my 1907 Mark I*** Navy rifle!
 
I seem to recall that Ellwood Epps, the first Ellwood, did these conversions of a No 4 to a 1 piece stock. The ones I have seen are very nice indeed, very good looking guns and an interesting piece of Canadian gunsmith History. I wonder if he did any No1's, I have never seen one of those.

That sounds cool. If I ever get my hands on an irrecoverable bubba, that may just be an option. Presently, there are a lot of Indian .308 SMLE's cut down to Jungle Carbine length floating around in the states to be had for a song, that could be a fun project!

Would an enfield sporting a bren mag have to be capped at 10?

The rifle is bolt action, so no limits to magazine capacity apply to the rifle at all. The magazine itself can be subject to regulations specific to that magazine, regardless of whether one fits it to a Lee-Enfield or doesn't fit it to anything at all.

Yup, it's what the mag was designed for that counts in the eyes of the law.
 
That's my one piece sporter in the thread. If any of you are really eager beavers, I may have another No 4 action laying around somewhere that has the butt socket already removed. All you would need to do is some creative whittling and make up a stock.:D
 
A few years ago, I saw a semi finished one piece stock blank at a gunshow for a very reasonable price. Didn't have the sense to grab it. Properly done, this makes a very nice sporting rifle, and there are lots of inexpensive bubba'd beyond hope candidates available.
Not necessarily related to one piece conversions, but British gunmakers made up tang safeties for Lee Speed actionned sporting rifles. Functionnal, elegant, and mechanically simple. Remove the butt socket from a SMLE action, and something is going to have to be done about the safety; this could be an option.
 
I have several #4's in one piece stock. Mine are all tr guns for long range back when we were still on issue ammunition for the matches. Ususally we cut the cocking piece in half and put in a double strength spring with a Canjar trigger. Shot very well.
 
I too have a 7.62 target rifle made up on a No. 7 action in a one piece stock. I understand it was made by someone named Collins. Speedlocked, Canjar trigger, S&L barrel. Oddly enough, the stock was made by someone named Robertson.
 
Local enthusiast showed me a No4T he had converted to one piece stock. He was so proud of his work!
 
That was Charlie Colins, one of the Ottawa gun plumbers when I was a teenager. Charlie also made some actions which used a Wichita bolt. Robertson stocks back then were sure different than now!

Sniff and wipe a tear from the eye at the passing of another No.4T sniper rifle.

Did he also polish all the black off the No.32 telescope to have a nice shiney brass tube .....?
