Enfield sporterized

this is what i did to ..... and do with..... my old girls. ;)
i love the no 1 mk3 , my second favorite rifle. my first rifle, a full wood lithgow with matching numbers, still remains unmolested. however these two beauties where far gone for original restoration but the chambers and bores were good, so..... these are just 2 of the dozen or more i've done up for fellow hunters

Nice paint job, as paint jobs go. Barrel looks heavy for a No.1. Did someone wind on a No.4 barrel by any chance?

No, I cut and crowned the existing barrel at 19" finished. Does give it a rather cool bull barrel look.
The rifle on top was a 6 inch plus grouper with 180gr federal sp. Now it's a hair over 2" @100 with same ammo. She's a fantastic 100 yard and less, bush rifle.

Rebarreling may prove way too costly, and un-needed as well.

If you were to bone up on #4 bedding technic's, set it up properly, then do an 'Agressive Bore Cleaning' with alternating strong copper cutting solvent and brake cleaner .... once down to bare bore metal she'll likely shoot much better.

My #1 Lithgow seemed impossible to clean. I would use a clean brush, followed up by 30+ patches until they came out white. Another round with a clean brush would just result in more dirty patches. This went on for 3 years until I started using Wipeout, and after 2 overnight sessions it was finally clean. Accuracy became more consistent and cleaning was easier. The gun now shoots 3 inches average with a 4x fixed bushnell. Before it was all over the board, 3-6 inches. One thing I find with Enfields is they really don't like having oil in the barrel, which could be said about most guns, but this platform in particular seems more sensitive.

So basically, I'm agreeing with this post because I considered a new barrel until I tried wipeout. With this product you don't need to lightly oil the barrel afterwards, and I had great results. Now if only I could tighten up the headspace without using dental floss

Wipeout? you talking about the agent orange of gardeners? Like the weed killer? Been using brake cleaner for a long time but never heard about using Wipeout. Hummm?

It's an ammonia-free foaming barrel cleaner, look for it in these fine stores

I typically reserve brake cleaner for degreasing a new gun, but if you've had success with it I'll give it a go. I'm usually a little leery about using this in milsurp as it just strips the metal of any protection it had against rust, so I go overboard with the oiling and usually forget to remove it come range or field time. I know I'm terrible and should own a boresnake, but there's something about an oily snake that makes me uncomfortable around other dudes.

Tx for the info will try that. But I guess it wont keep the weeds out :)

Hopefully this makes you feel better

Just a quick question though, do you run the brake cleaner down your bore with patches? I had a REALLY bad experience yesterday when I took a full shot of brake cleaner to the eyes degreasing a bolt in my bathroom.

Just keep the brake cleaner and wipeout away from your #### and eyes or, they may cause them to fall off. If it gets into your eyes or #### dont look, your Bolt may need re-attachement , try again. If all else fails try the feel better solution like the Rocket Man suggests??????

Nice pussy cat ya got there RS, ... mine just defacates and urinates willy nilly about the place.

OP,

The thing with those old Mil bores, they rarely if ever, saw an agressive bore cleaning. The armourer's had ammonia, yes, but not the grunt's, so all those rounds fired built up layer apon layer of carbon and jacket fouling(old cupro-nickle being the worst to get out). Imagine the layers of an onion skin. Carbon/jacket/carbon etc..
Brake cleaner helps strip the carbon so the underlaying layer is exposed to solvent.
It can take many, many repeat's to get an ammonia patch to come out not blue stained.

Flood the bore with brake cleaner, let it sit muzzle down a few mins., brush a few strokes, patch.
Flood with aggressive copper cutter, let sit, brush and patch.
Repeat.
Repeat.

If cupro fouled, bore paste with a tight patch between the above steps.

When no blue shows, and the rod feels even resistance as you push ... your done.

Dont get either chemical on the gun's exterior.

How bad can fouling get?, one old 6.5mm, made in 1899 Swede was fouling constricted a full 2.5 thou. in the first inch of the barrel. It overpressured and expanded Lapua primer pockets with(dismally inaccurate)mild starting loads. The bolt was hard to lift.
Dozens of the above cleanings exposed a good bore that now shoots 5/8th's MOA, and with 5 grains more R22 in the case, to normal pressures.

Concentrate on bedding and the bore, they shoot well when they're in the good shape you described yours as being.

Yup! that's the whole nine yards there. TX for bringing this subject to a close.
Some WW2 guys also poured boiling water into the brl to get rid of the salts before they cleaned it out with what they had. Worked for them. Did not even have a pussy to help them. GOD bless them all!

And for those of you wanting to keep an old sporter alive... By late may I'll be offering stock choices for No1 MK3 actions in modern, hand crafted composite by special order. Pics will come by end of march

this is the first sporter that got "reborn" on my bench a few years back. dunno who owns it now but she was a great deer slayer as well ;)

Here are some pictures. No 4 MK 1*

Couple of questions?

From the pics is it an original barrel? If I was to order the replacements stocks for it I know they need some fitting but is everything else in the right place lol. I believe they are just checking. It is a 2 groove barrel as well.

Thanks for the help it is getting torn down for a long overdue cleaning and check up

Barrel is full length original by the look of it. You have the sight protector fitted that I was suggesting the OP fit to his rifle.

Take it out of the stock, disassemble, put it in the bath tub while your SO is out, spray it all over with Easy Off Oven Cleaner, let sit for 20 minutes, then wash off with very hot water and put it on the woodstove or in the oven to dry. When hot and dry, spray oil thoroughly and wipe down.
