ok so this is weird, ive dry fired it a few times to make sure it works, bolt moves freely. i decided to make sure the safety works. i put the safety on, pulled the trigger, it pulled in, put the safety off and the trigger wont pull. safety only seems to go about 1/3 of the way back and thats it, i pull the trigger the bolt moves a little but it wont go click. and the bolt is now cocked and i cant get it to move, so its stuck in the cocked position and doesnt move or fire. any ideas of what the hell i did and what i can do to fix this?

Someone more knowledgeable than me may correct me but I would remove the screw, retainer, and the safety should slide right out. Then you will be able to release the pressure on the firing pin and see whats going on.

ive got the trigger guard off right now, trying to figure out how the wood comes off, gonna have to get a better screw driver, the screw holding the safety in place just broke my cheapy, maybe its not meant to come out, lol. this thing is full of crap too so im sure its jammed up on something

got it, the bolt wasnt cocked all the way, not sure why it wasnt, but i just grabbed the part that comes out the back of it and pulled it back a bit and she locked into place and fired. weird. gonna give the bolt a good cleaning tomorrow. thanks for the help

That's normal. The Lee-Enfield has a half-#### position.

yeah im learning that, now thew safety is giving me grief. i pulled it off to see if i could clean any crap out before realizing the issue, put it back toether and the bolt is extremely tight in there. i loosen the screw holding the safety in place and its smooth as butter. heres the problem

part number 2 in that picture, the little nipple that slide into the gun at the top is rubbing against the bolt and creating friction. mines sitting in there the same way as this one and its being a little bastard. i noticed that the safety has a threading of sorts so i put it in as close to the safety as i can and its still being stiff. any thoughts on this?

never mind just figured it out, the little bastard goes on a half dozen different ways, i was offf by a couple teeth and it kept landing in the wrong position when fully tight. smooth as butter again. thanks guys :D

You have a sticky with tons of Enfield books and manuals in it at the top of the page.

Lee Enfield safety

This happens frequently when someone just HAS to take the Lee Enfield rifle apart down to the last screw for "cleaning" or whatever.

When the safety itself is taken apart, there are six different ways to assemble it, FIVE of which are WRONG.

I once posted a set of pictures on this Forum showing the proper way to assemble the Safety and suggested they be made into a Sticky. However, they were not, and a few times a month the same type of thread on "My Lee Enfield will not fire." appear.

Using the "Search" function on this Forum can help find previous answers to the common problems.
.

Someone suggesting that you use the search function on this site has obviously never used it. It sucks. There should be an Enfield maintenance sticky so people can find stuff more easily.

the search function on here is crap, if i search for something after ive asked i usually only find my own post. i resort to asking on here after google searching for my answers. i had no idea the enfield had a half cocked position and saw it was cocked but didnt know it was all the way out. ive shot this gun a total of zero times and ive had it for less than a month. so i wouldnt know off hand the way it looks half and fully cocked, otherwise i would have caught onto it.

i had no intention of stripping this thing to the very last cleaning. everything works smoothly so i spray off whatever i could get to with aerosol crud cutter and then re oiled what i could with my finger and worked the oil through dry firing it. all 4 moving parts are officially clean and oiled lol. i didnt notice the safety had the threading on it until after i posted this and realized it had to sit in there, i thought it just slid into place. also the other issue was it fell off so i didnt know how it came out. but some looking through google brought up a few pictures and a complete break down of the gun that i was after.

so i looked, but this being my first bolt action milsurp means im still learning as i play with it.

bigedp51, it made more sense to just ask on here while i tried to figure it out for myself then to spend an hour reading and hoping i found the answer, im sure i figured it out long before i would have read the answer in a sticky or failed at using the search function. thanks for that.

perhaps its time for a sticky with common issues with this and other milsurps so that people like myself who are first time owners who get stuck with a problem and just want to learn can find the answers we need

so im not the only one, i looked through the links above, spent a good hours looking through them, found some good stuff, didnt see a single break down on the enfield, found break downs on a dozen other mil surps, found some cool info, but honestly unless i missed something, nothing that would have related to my issue. regardless its solved now, and i think i may go and fire this thing finally this weekend

The problem with the search function is that it defaults to posts "within the last week". If you want to search earlier than that you have to select the time frame from the drop down menu.

Why it is set up that way I have no idea. It makes no sense, and I've never seen another forum do that.

The 20 second interval between searches is highly annoying as well.

a lot of forums do that 20 second default, some are even 1 minute, not sure why the hell they do that, maybe for spam bots?

Easy way to detwermine if you have the safety correctly assembled. Remove bolt, install safety. IF when the safety is ON the lug should protrude into the reciever
If the safety is OFF the lug should COMPLETELY retract into the wall of the reciever.
Any other condition is WRONG

Sounds like you had the cocking piece in the half #### position. It usually takes effort to do this - If it is doing this on it's own that would be a first for me. I've never heard of this happening before. May need a new cocking piece.

i got it sorted out, i think i only pulle the bolt back a little and it cocked and i assumed it was fully cocked.

my first indication something was wrong was when the bolt wouldnt go back in, found it was that little pin you mentioned sticking out. its back in place now and sorted out, lesson learned if i ever run into it again

If the safety was assembled wrong it can catch the cocking piece on pulling the trigger and fall into half ####, you would also notice the bolt being hard to move as the safety is pressing on the bolt.

I bought an Enfield for $75.00 once for this very reason, just because he reassembled the safety wrong.

Below, ready to fire.
