well, we all know there are a Great many old sporterized lee Enfield rifles out there and I have always had a penchant for hunting coastal blacktails with mine. many of us have em.... dusty, ugly, bastardized relics from our fathers and grandfathers. Sold in the 60's and 70's for under 50.00 at sears, hudson bay co.... and many other outfits that used to cater to loggers, miners, prospectors.... and the game getters, the hunters.

My first hunting rifle, a BSA Lee enfield no1 mk 3, sporterized military stock, Weaver TO-1 dovetail rail and a ill fitting 10 round magazine, was handed down to me by my father many years ago. Took my biggest buck of all time with that rifle a couple years ago. problem is i found it snagged on things when i went thru the thick stuff. i wanted a shorter barrel, a higher cheek weld..... the standard fare sporter needed some time on my bench for a complete, modern makeover.
the first custom enfield i did up was picked up by a friend and he loved it big time. Open sights removed, barrel cut and crowned at 19 inches, bolt head replaced for improved headspace, custom picatinny scope rail i machine myself, and a fixed position kydex cheek riser, then to top it off, the whole package gets bathed in my custom camo finish.

here's a few pics some of you may enjoy. The purists and collectors amongst us need not freak out, my policy on customizing these fine rifles is that i will only do the work on sporters. I will not under any circumstances take a collectable, mint or otherwise, full wod original finish enfield and do what i have done to these hehhehe. BUT for those of you who like what you see..... you may have an enfield kicken around that could be reborn into one fine hunting rifle..... check out the pics and you'll see what i mean

Fricking mainlander deer... grumble grumble grumble.

Looking good though, at least you're using it and not letting it rust in a cupboard somewhere.

Nice deer! And from the looks of it, quality work on the rifle. But, personally, I prefer going in the other direction - from "an enfield kicken around that could be reborn into"...

Unless, of course, the barrel is already cut. In which case a refurb wouldn't be practical (it would require another barrel - so taking one used barrel from a good action to stick it on another action... that's running in circles, right?)

most of the rifles i've done have been mismatched and of no real collectable value. I have a friend who is a big enfield fan and he is going to try and source a bunch of original parts, full wood sets, spare parts ect. Then we will be able to go "both ways" , custom deer guns and restorations of collectables in full wood. I've got 3 myself, 2 full wood lithgows, all matching and one long Branch No 4 that looks like it was manufactured yesterday.
While i respect the esthetics of an original finish enfield, I also believe these are fantastic deer guns and some are good candidates for the custom alterations above.

ah yes I have some of both,

some are good to restore and some are good for parts, but there is only so many parts you can use. At some point in time you have to do someting with the pile of parts and bitster rifles. So if any have good barrels and have been cut I tend to make carbine lenght rifles out of them :D the wood splicing is a bit of a job.

I'm startign to look for another project, but want a No4 action that I can build my 6.5mm SPE (special purpose enfield) ;) I'll be working with 30-30 brass for the project, but thats next year or the year after or might get bumped if I find a .44 or .45 barrel for another project I have in mind :D

No harm in taking a bad bubba job and making it usefull and not too hard to look at :D

Great stuff! Neat looking rifles. I would use one of those custom jobs in a heartbeat. You are taking some nasty old bubbas and making good use of them. A work of love! Great pics. Thanks for sharing. kj

What was the distance of the shot ? Nice deer by the way....

well.... :D .... deer number one was taken at about 30 yards, lung shot, head on but slightly quartering away.

deer number two received it's first 180gr pill at about 20 yards, broadside lungshot BUT turned and walked dead straight at me..... I side stepped him and hit him again at 15 feet in the head..... kinda of a graphic explanation, but you asked :D
rifle number 2 with the ghost cedar camo has taken deer out to 150 ish yards, she's a tight grouper and a proven deer gun.

thanx for the positive comments guys. i always worry about getting flamed big time for posting pics of the enfields i customize, I'm glad some can appreciate them.

um.. m14doc .. not hunting with a m14 WTF?>????>>?

i like your 303. when will you have the scope mounts forsale?>

I do ALL my coastal blacktail hunting with an enfield, always have, always will. The terrain here on the coast where these deer live is nasty, steep and dense bush. I find the enfield , customized as in my pics above, becomes the perfect rifle for me while hunting those deer.
The M14 goes with me when i head to the B.C. interior for big mule deer and I'll be packing one for the next 2 weeks come sunday for moose and mulies.

I am hoping to make the enfield picatinny rail availlable in limited quantities in January..... but no promises, I don't want to keep guys hanging or let them down with high expectations. I'm waiting on an electrician friend to have the time to wire the shop with 3 phase power for my milling machine and lathe.... then the fun begins :D

and man.... that louthepou sporter is a honey of a rifle, very nice ;)

Thanks 45acpking! Mind you I didn't do much on that one. It came to me with a broken butt and ill-fitted forend, so I used spares I had here (whihc I refinished), and did a few other minor things. Happy it is being used and not rusting away in a cupboard!

So like m14doc, I agree that there's always something useful to do with a cut-barreled, drilled-receiver old LE :)
