In case you haven't seen it, there's an article about Maoists in India in Saturday's Globe (Focus, page F4), with a shot of some Maoists at target practice...all of them, apparently, using Lee Enfields. Certainly there's a No. 4 up front with what look like a bunch of sporters in behind.

The picture is unfortunately, not online, or I'd link to it, but there is an audio slideshow on the Globe's site that includes another couple of photos mixed in showing Enfields, a Garand and maybe a Bren (?):

I saw the same article,..and you are right,..a No.4 rifle, and looks like several sporterized Lee Enfields,..these old warhorses are often seen in far-off cess pools...earlier this year at terroist attack in Mumbai, India...the Indian police crouched behind cover..with the trusty SMLE, and No.4's..might have been a Long Branch:):)

India has a real problem brewing within its borders. With the new industrial revolution there are some incredible profits being made. The profits aren't usually staying in the country. The wealth isn't trickling down. On the other hand, with such a huge population base, there will probably never be enough to trickle all the way down anyway. I am a little surprised that China or Korea hasn't become involved to a greater extent. It seems like the rebels are on their own. The Indian government doesn't issue enough ammunition to their police for them to make a stand in a sustained fight either. Hopefully they can settle their problems before it turns into an out and out civil war. India has so many factions and there is friction between all of them. The glue that binds them together, may just be poverty. For the muslim radicals, it's Wahabi. The Lee Enfields will be traded off for the first semi auto to come along.

With Pakistan coming apart, India can't be that far behind. Pakistan is china"s ally and russia is india's ally. Economics and water is going to undo all of them. Mostly water. They get most of their water from 15 days of rain each year. The snow packs are melting and water is in short supply. The gobi desert is increasing by the size of the sahara desert each year. So, the next time it rains think about them, and hope it rains more!
