Enfields which was best?

The No4 is considered to be the best bolt-action military rifle ever made. The Mauser guys like to disagree, but everyone's entitled to be wrong now and then.;)

The Mauser is a fine hunting or sporting rifle... probably the best.

But a battle rifle it is not. The top prize goes to the Enfield.

Once the Enfield got a good charger loading system it was all over for the Mausers as serious contenders.

I love the looks and history of the SMLE with it's snub nose and 1907 bayonet.
It is the true classic especially as it served in both world wars.

I was going to say the custom no 4 by Parker hale but Woodchopper over ruled me. Still it is great to see a old soldier get all dressed up.

The No4T was the best sniper rifle of WW2 so it's status is assured.

I love the No5 but it did not live up to it's potential. A good slip on recoil pad can make a No5 a fantastic little rifle. It had the best bayonet as well.

The post war no4's were excellent .I would love a 7.62 someday even an indian.

I was under rthe impression that the Indians stuck with the SMLE, so you'd be looking at a DCRA or post-war Brit conversion to get a 7.62 No.4 (Or go with the new-build AIAs)

Ishapore produced a number of No1 MkIII's in 7.62, known as the 2A and 2A1
