I am far from a expert on gun dogs, but with what I had read on English, and American Cockers is that most of the breeders have breed the 'hunting' out of them and breed them to be more of a family dog. Just pick your breeder wisely, get the history of the parents of the dog. Have they competed in any NAVHDA events? How well did they preform? Keep this in mind when choosing a puppy and also breeder.

There are still some hunting cockers around, but far more of the English variety than the American. Dozens of ECS hunting lineage breeders in the US and few in Canada. The American CS is almost dead as a hunting dog. There is at least one breeder in the US that advertises hunting lineage American Cockers but he doesn't seem to answer queries. Too bad, the ACS was a fantastic little bird dog once.
