Engraved or etched

On a couple of my barrels the caliber and name do not look to be stamped or engraved.They are quite smooth to the touch.Is this a type of etching. If so how is it done? Who supplies the etching materials if that is what it is?

I know that many manufacturers now use laser-etching for serial numbers and other markings, so that would be my first guess. As to how it's done, I have no idea, but I would imagine it's not an inexpensive system.

I have an acid-etch system that I used to use on knives years ago, but I've never tried it on a firearm. I suppose it would work the same. They are commercially available (I think I got mine from House of Tools in Edmonton), so just try and google acid-etching kits and see what you can find. Mine is pretty user-friendly, and the chemicals aren't that nasty to work with, either. I will check the unit when I get home from work tonight and PM you with the manufacturer if you would like.
