Hi Folks,
Took my M305 shorty to the range today to see if I could finally get her zeroed in. I also had a new KCI mag to try out.
The new mag gave me nothing but issues, wouldn't slide into the gun smoothly at all, wouldn't engage on the tab at the front of the mag well and wouldn't latch at the back without a lot of percusive maintenance. The first round causes so much drag I had to forward assist the bolt into battery. Reloading the mag was an exercise in frustration. I'm not particularly careful about not tilting mags forward when snapping rounds in -- not a problem in the norc mags. When I reloaded the KCI mag, lower rounds would slide forward and catch on the front of the mag, binding up and preventing me from adding more rounds. My norc mags have a minimum 5.5 round capacity, KCI is just a hair over 5.
I was using a Battle Zero Target from M14.ca for sighting in and I turned off the gas system to maximize repeatability. Every time I thought I had the the adjustment I needed, (striking the line above the dot), subsequent shots would start stringing back down to the sighting dot. I tightened the knob on the left and started paying closer attention to the markings and noticed that the sights would lose two to three clicks with each shot. Adjusting back to the mark each shot finally had my groupings closer to where they should be and reasonably tight, enough that I'm at least hitting the paper out to 200 meters now. And yes, I finished the day with a couple of mags in semi-auto to get the gas system running again.
The sight is still spitting oil back at me every shot, but it isn't gushing anymore. Obviously I'm going to have to yank the sight off and clean it & grease it and reinstall it. Any advice (other than replace it, which ain't gonna happen before next year), in getting it tight and behaving properly? She'll be going on a road trip in a couple of weeks.
Of the 90 rounds (Norc steel cased) I fired today, 8 had splits at the case neck. I'm not too concerned as the bullet of an unfired round pushed into the mouth of a fired case meets a fair amount of resistance before the necks of the casings meet. I have some .308win rounds I'll run through it next session. Hungry, are you still willing to check head space from fired brass if I mail it out to ya?
The other thing I learned today (Pistol Related) is that the ejection port on a CZ SP-01 is too short to allow a spent blank cartridge to cycle out. Anybody know if Glocks or M&P 9's will cleanly eject IVI 9mm blanks?
