Entering the rimfire world

Man I envy all you guys who can shoot open sights I got scopes and optics on all mine pretty much as soon as I started this hobby. Nothing I can do about it, it’s always going to be optics over irons for me sadly.

Why not give it a try?

Our club has fun-shoots for .22 every second Saturday after the new year. Three classes, Open sight, Scope, and Pistol. Lots of fun!! I shoot in all three, and do fairly well for an old guy. When I started shooting, scopes were a luxury item. Every rifle came with iron sights; some better than others. Rich kids and families might have a scoped .22; the odd centrefire hunting rifle might have had a scope installed; but for the most part, they were not common.

Tasco brought low cost scopes to the market, and I think that was the start of it. For me, if I can see the target without a scope, I don't need one... if I have good sights, properly set up.

Interesting fact; a few guys set up various pistols with reflex sights; mostly .22s over the last few years; despite being set up well, no one shot as well with them as they did with factory sights on their pistols.

I have a low power scope on my AR on a one-piece removable mount; I also have folding back-up sights. Not a lot of difference at 100 yards from a bench-rest either way; free hand, I shoot better with the sights.

Haha believe me I have but as my eye doctor has said it’s physically impossible since I got an unusual stigma won’t get into it but anything past 50 yards for me is a no go, eyes will process the rear sight clear for me but as soon as I align it to the front and the front to a target my 2’x2’ bullseye target looks like a blob can’t even see the bullseye anymore at 75 yards my eye won’t properly focus or process it. it’s weird but I can see fairly far just fine but when I focus nothing but blobs, as soon as I use a red dot and my eyes don’t need to take another step to focus and align I’m fine but what can you do. In my early 20’s and here’s hoping I don’t need to quit this hobby altogether as I age for poor eyesight.

I understand; have you tried a peep sight; they work amazingly well to sharpen focus.

I have, they work well as intended to sharpen my focus but not by much for me at least sadly best I got with them is only to shoot for centre mass I’ll get nothing for accuracy. As it still pretty much fades as I align the sights to be honest makes me feel worse when I use them because it’s so much more apparent when I align it and everything out of the round peep is clear and as soon as you look though it, it’s like a murky blur portal I’m trying to align.

Look at it this way progress is just that progress, it is no secret that optics are better then iron sights, just use the military as an example every picture you see of front line soldiers all have some type of optics on there rifles. Better to see what you are shooting at then guessing and hoping it is safe to shoot.

I hear that at least I can enjoy this hobby safely and hey I’ll end up pumping a bit more into a local firearms business in the end.
