There have been a few threads recently where people post pictures of wounds and have people guess what may be responsible for them. I went through my pictures and here is one from 3 years ago. Take a guess what made this.

Deer was shot at ~50 yards, the bullet broke the spine and came to rest just under the hide on the other side (did not exit).

Cheers

Why is anyone playing? I don't think there is any way to have any idea what caused that wound. The bullet used will have much more profound effect on the nature of any wound, than will calibre choice.

The deer in question could have been shot with anything from a .22-250 to a .257 Wby. to a .300 mag. of some sort shooting explosive varmint bullets, or maybe...... well... you get the idea. I'll be interested to see what it was, but I have no guess to make.

I doubt it was a "premium" bullet, whatever the calibre.

Yes, pointless. Could be anything from a .223 to a .45-70. The shrapnel damage is likely caused by bone splinters, not bullet fragments.

So there ya have it. Slow and heavy vs light and fast. They both can cause a mess and both can be somewhat clean!!! What I like to see is the bullets after. Guess that's hard with a pass through:)

I did find the bullet as it was just under the hide and I put the bullet on the table. I lost it somehow cutting up the meat. It is in a freezer bag somewhere with meat I guess. If I come across it I will post a pic.
