Hello everyone,

I'm looking to get a precision styled 223 bolt action rifle. I've decided on 223 based on two factors.

First is purpose, I live in the city and have to shoot on a range and currently the maximum range offered is 200 yards, with intentions to build a 300 yard range. This will solely be a bench gun.

Second is cost, I've got a lot of 223 ammo lying around with nothing to shoot it with. It's bulk federal, I know it's not going to be extremely accurate, but it's what I got for the time being. Also I don't think 308 will be worth it for shooting paper at these ranges.

Most of my shooting has been done with modern supporter styled rifles at 50 yards so this is all new to me. I don't have any preferences for brand, but aesthetically, I want something that looks like an M24 in a synthetic stock.

Some of the rifles I've considered that I've seen reviewed positively are:
Savage 110 varmint with the 26" barrel
Tikka t3x special edition ctr with the 24" barrel
Howa 1500 varmint with the 20" heavy barrel

The plan is to pair this with either the Nikon fx1000 6-24 or the Sightron s3 8-32 optic.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

Take a look at the Savage 10T-SR, from Cabela's. Multiple options for calibre, and .223 is available with a 24 inch barrel. Comes with a 20MOA rail, and a threaded muzzle (.223 is 1/2-28).

The 10T-SR is very much an entry level option at a reasonable price, and it goes on sale fairly regularly at Cabela's - the last time being late February/early March. For a "cheap" rifle, they punch well above their weight class.

Can a person get 10+ round magazines for that?

Savage does make a 10rd magazine, ht tps://store.savagearms.com/product/55185/SAVAGE-55185-MAGAZINE-308-WIN-6.5-CRE-SHORT-MATTE-BLUED-10-SHOT.html?cid=20 , although a lot of shooters upgrade the stock and end up switching to AICS magazines.

I've picked up a Ruger American Ranch in AR and am considering putting it into a MDT LSS XL GEN2 stock. This would give me a quite compact, accurate 5.56mm rifle that takes AR15 mags but is hopefully more ban resistant than my AR15.

Pretty sure none of MDT's chassis use AR-15 magazines....

I think the craftsmanship of both the Tikka and the Howa are very good. And while all of the rifles mentioned so far should be tack drivers I'd pick the Tikka CTR hands down over everything else listed.

Lots to choose from in .223....for those ranges but don’t overlook the varmint models either. Typically the varmint have a little slower twist for the lighter projectiles but will shoot awesome at those ranges.

I’m a Remington guy so good choices are (and they all have good stocks to start with);
- 700 Police 1:9
-700 Police LTR (20”) 1:9
-700 Mil Spec 1:9
-Long Range Tactical 1:9
-700 VS, VSF, VSSF Varmint models 1:12
-SPS Tactical or SPS Varmint, but both will need the stock upgraded.

Tikka is good or a real beauty is the Sako Varmint.

How is the Remington 700 police? I saw that one comes with a 24" barrel which is pretty much exactly I was looking for appearance wise.

another option could be Rem 783 heavy barrel (~$500) + MDT LSS chassis (wait for their Black Friday sale)

Most of the 700P in .223 will have 26” barrels, but they have tweaked that product line recently as well.
As for how they shoot, any that I’ve had or shot with have been great...in any model actually.

Would have to say Savage Arms is the way to go.
Below is the... Savage Model 10 Predator Hunter Max 1 (223 rem)
This may not exactly be the model you are after, but this thing is hellishly accurate. I shoot the Sierra 65 grain SBT "through" coyotes, and the cheap Hornady 55gr soft points "at" gophers. I hand load everything, and its not hard to get 3 shot group that looks like 1 enlarged hole.
In stressful times, there is no therapy like shooting gophers with something big!
