Entry level precision rifles

Entry level precision rifle... a true contradiction in terms.

You can get an entry level rifle, or a precision rifle... Not both.

I have never been worse than 4th place in competition in the last year with my entry level precision rifles. I have smoked custom rifles, Cadex rifles, AI rifles, you name it. First place my last match with 189/200 points. Results are posted here on CGN under Tactical Teacher.

I dont shoot F class but practice with F class guys fairly often at 900M at Connaught. I do better than custom 7mm SAUM rifles fairly often too.20190712_092331.jpg

Plenty of witnesses on CGN have seen me do it. Off the shelf entry level precision rifles.

Are they all long actions?

There is an advantage to running a long action that people outside competition circles tend to realize... To maximize long range performance we run super long slender shaped bullets.

When stuffing them into a short action box magazine, that means the box mag limits the overall length of the round and not the seating depth that would allow the bullet to touch the lands. Accuracy tends to be crappy with these bullets in this configuration because they have greater jump to the lands.

When for example running 185 Berger jugs in a 308 with a long throat I cannot eject a live round from a Rem 700 short action. So for a target gun for 308 I would preferer to have started with a long action so that I could eject a live round for one, and to be able to feed the live round from a mag, instead of single shot mode only.

The same applies to many other so called medium length cartridges... and would be better served running from long actions.

Another example is the lowly old 223... Most 223s run ridiculously short mags and actions. The 223 can actually hit 2990 FPS with 75 grain bullets if seated to 2.56 OAL, but then good luck finding a mag can to actually feed this character. If not the mag limitation its the action itself. In this case a short action Rem 700 with AI mags tends to be the solution, but the point is the actions for these long range bullets needs to be supersized.

If you don't hand load, none of the above applies to you.

I agree with this 100%, thus my question about the 783 action length.

This is the exact reason I went with the 6mm CM over the std 243 in a short action and used a long action for a 257Roberts several years ago.

The 783 SA will feed a full 2.95OAL cartridge.. whatever will fit in the longest AICS mag. It will extract and eject a cartridge with an OAL of 3.10".

Good info. Thanks

I'd be interested in one of those in 243 but it seems the Remington can't figure out how to get a faster twist bbl on a 243 or 22-250.

Tikka in a KRG Bravo or X-ray is an excellent option. Action is great and super smooth, and the system is generally capable of 1/2 MOA with proper factory ammunition.

Hard to beat this for a mostly factory setup.
