Santa Claus attended early and brought me one of the new Eotech 3X magnifiers. This one has the flip over mount that also allows for the magnifier to be removed so it may be used simply as a viewing sight.

I've put up some pictures to simplify my explaination.
The normal Eotech reticule, to me, has always been a bit 'fuzzy'. With the magnifier installed, the reticule is 'cleaned' up considerably.

Who ever actually manufactures the optics for this glass did an outstanding job. It is of extremely high quality, at least on par with the Elcan/Leitz glass. Side to side clarity is amazing.

The bottom line with this is, the sight picture is fantastic.

Eotech also makes a 4X. However, it's almost double the price and double the weight. I just couldn't justify to Santa having 1 more magification.

Very cool.

It looks like it sits a little higher than the stock Eotech. Would it line up with one on a LaRue riser or a 553?

Nice setup, which magnifier is it then that meshes with the new 557?

Nice custom engraved lower...

Both the 3x and 4x are designed for the 557. I like the combo - the 557 puts the controls on the left out of the way of the optic, and the BDC will come in handy. Works well on my gun.

The 4x is more than just one more power, it's supposed to maintain the rectangular viewport of the eotech and have even better light transmission and clarity than the 3x.

Very nice KOLDT!

I'm running the 4X with an XR308 - the glass it very bright and clear.
I have not had a chance to dial it in yet though.

Can The magnifier be used on its own/ Or does it need the EOtech for it
to be effecive?

All it does is magnify. You can use it behind any reflex sight (eg., Eotech, Aimpoint). Without a sight, it's an expensive monocular. Since it comes off easily (on the flip mount), you can use it as such.

Wouldnt a S&B short dot be a better bang for the buck setup? How does the rifle feel when you flip it over ? it must put it off ballance, does it bounce up and down if you run with it?

It looks like an Eotech + the magnifier is still less expensive than a Short Dot. You're probably looking from $900 to $1400 for the pair (Depending on which sight, which magnifier, and which mount system). A short dot will run you about $2K, and then you'll probably be shelling out another $100 to $200 to mount it.

The Short Dot still seems to be the Porsche of black rifle optics...from a pricing point of view at least.

The Eotech/magnifier combo doesn't have me 100% sold yet. Flipping the optic to the side...strikes me as having a fair amount of potential for the optic to get damaged when moving through close country at night (or any of a dozen other scenarios). I'm not 100% against it...just not sold yet. Maybe the idea will grow on me. Especially if someone lets me try their AR with a magnifier on it :D

If you're doing that you won't need optic for a while - so take it off. it 's attached to the mount via an ARMS lever.

The flip-off / slap-on is faster than turning a dial for magnification changes. LaRue makes a nifty mount that looks as fast and stronger to boot.
