EOTech + BLR ?????

My friend wants to put an EOTech tactical site on a 308 BLR. His idea is that it would be good for defeating bear attacks and perhaps for taking caribou at moderate range. It seems kind of goofy to me, but maybe I am wrong.

I viewed the EOTech only once, years ago, and cannot remember it well. I understand that it is battery operated and you cannot leave it on indefinitely. I wonder if you might not have time to switch the thing on before the bear begins chowing down on your groin. Might you also panic in the moment of truth and be unable to operate it? Is it just another thing that might go wrong at a critical time, leading to disaster?

As for shooting caribou, does the EOTech offer any advantage over iron sites? Scopes improve accuracy, amplify light and make shooting safer, as targets are more easily identified and distinguished. Does the EOTech do any of those things?

Anyway, I still hope he buys it so I have a new toy to play with. Glad it isn’t my money, though, cause it seems a waste. Am I wrong?

I have used a Holo Sight on both rifles and shotguns for hunting... and taken several deer on the run with one.
They have the fastest aquisition time of any sight made.... whats not to like?
 
Red dot sights and holotech sights have been used on other leverguns including Marlin 1895s with good success.

Even recall one gunwriter using a Eotech on a shotgun for goose hunting and found it improved the number of geese he brought down.

As for your friend wanting to try it, I too say, Go for it!
 
I don't know about caribou hunting, but for fast, center-of-mass targeting ie angry bear, there's not much better if you have no irons.

Newer models have very long life on AA batteries and auto shut off after 8 hrs.

I cannot remember how the controls work on the EOTech. I only saw a unit once, years ago. Will you have time to switch the thing on, if you are attacked by a bear? Can you still use the iron sites, if you have no time to hit the "on" button? Also, does this site work in extreme cold, like -35 Celsius?

For what he is using it for, in the cold, I would recommend some kind of iron sight. The EO is cool, works great, has fast acquisition, great situational awareness, etc., but most guys who use them in the military still want backup irons sights that you can see through the EOtech window.

It could be left on, but I would worry about battery performance at that temp, and frost on the window right when you need it.

In other circumstances, I'd say go for it. I have an EOTech that I have even put on my Tikka .223 T3 Tactical. I did 1.3" groups with it at 100M off a bipod. They do work but farther distances are a bit of a pain, and you pretty much have to guess your hold over.

I would leave the sight turned "on" as the batteries last most of the day... but have extras with you!

Some shotgun sights might co-witness with the Eotech.

And no, you can't count on having time to switch it on.

And no, it won't work very welll in -35.

Like I said before, there's not much better "if you have no irons"


 
You get 40 hours out of a set of batteries, or 400 hours with the AA model. So just keep it on. But batteries in that temperature would be a serious concern. Eotech operation would have been tested thouroughly to determine operation temperatures. I'd read up before spending the cash.

If it will operate properly then it is ideal for the job, super fast aquisition.

edit to add: those battery life figures are from memory, may not be accurate.

Seriously though, it's good to hear that there is a cold weather option for the Eotech. With such widespread military use I thought they might have a solution.
 
I hate to appear overly ignorant of bears and their lifestyle, but don't they hibernate when it's -35 Celsius?

I like the idea of an Eotech on a BLR...fast target acquisition, and fast follow up.
 
Warren - been up in prince rupert, just made it back. Not sure if I can make Sunday, dealing with car troubles. Will try and make it by though. It's been far too long. :)
