What are your thoughts on either choice for an AR15 that will be used for punching paper at the range & 3-gun competitions.

I already have an EOTech (that I could get rid of if necessary) and there is no plan to do tactical/service rifle session with it.

EOTech + 3x Magnifier vs 1-4x Scope ?

Brands & models suggested ?

Thanks

I have a Leupold VX-R 1-4 and I love it. Tons of eye relief, very bright, and made solid. The red dot is a sweet feature as well, makes target acquisition very fast and easy.

I have a Leupold HAMR with the Deltapoint on top and like the 4x optic and red dot sight.

i would think that this would be better than an Eotech with a flip away magnifier for competition and heres why...

-the transition from 1X to 4X is instant as you do not need to flip a switch of any kind but rather re-adjust to a slightly higher cheekweld.

-the flip away magnifier can interfere with ergonomics and distributes the weight over to one side of the rifle making it awkward for balance.

-the spring loaded flip to side mounts sometimes cause the magnifier to bounce up and down when your moving quickly through a course and can really bugger up getting off a quick shot.

im not sure if you have the need to make the transition from 1X to 4X during the course run or if its something you would change up between stages, if it isnt then i would think the eotech could work fine.

i personally run Elcan Spectre DR's on just about everything but i do have 2 rifles with the Eotechs and Aimpoint 3X magnifiers, 1 mounted on an Aimpoint twist mount and one on a Sampson flip mount (i hardly ever use them mostly because of the short battery life.)...

Trijicon TR24 1-4x variable. No batteries, great glass, put a lever on it, if you'll be switching quickly. This set up is hard to beat, IMO. Take a look at the equipment lists from a lot of the good 3 Gun shooters and you'll see a pattern quickly emerge. Other 1-4x options that I've heard good things about include the Millett DMS, Burris TAC30, and a couple of others. I have the Trijicon and wouldn't trade it for anything else I've looked at.

Personally I plan on going with a 1-4x Vortex Viper. Good glass, relatively inexpensive, Illumination if you want it. Vortex makes a switch lever for it if you need it.

1. Decide what/who's 3-gun you're gonna shoot.
2. Read up on and choose the division in which you will want to compete in.
3. Decide on sighting system.

With an eotech and magnifier you'll most likely be put into one of the "Optics" divisions where you will be up against all more conventionally scoped rifles.

Some orgs lump Eotech's into the iron sight div., but with a magnifier you're put into "optics"...
You gotta decide where you wanna be.
Personally... I'd avoid Eotech for competition...
Get the sun in your eyes and well... Goodbye reticle.

Yes, check the rules. USPSA for instance allows one optic in the Tactical division... which can have a magnifier, but you must leave it either magnified or unmagnified for the entire stage (no flipping back and forth). For Open division you can have as many optics as you want which includes flipping back and forth between magnified/unmagnified.

ok... and for scopes, are triangle easier to see in the sun than crossair (trijicon)? Haven't shot an AR scope outside with big sunlight
