Hi, this is a duplicate of a thread I started. It was suggested that I post it here to ensure others do not trip into the same mistake I made.

I am very new to hunting but have been skeet shooting previously in the UK and have a Beretta 687 O/O already. As part of my ongoing integration into life in Canada I decided to take up hunting as a sport and hobby. I took all of the courses and started on the expensive business of getting the equipment required, I did a lot of reading and homework on the guns I would need and toured around Cabella's and Bass Pro locally to find out what kind of gun I would need. I decided to purchase a shot gun first for turkey and wild bird and had settled on a Benelli supernova. I did a bit of research and found that Epps had a good deal on a supernova so decided to take the 1.5 hour drive to the store to review the gun and make the purchase. Being a real novice I was given some very good advice by the sales person (Chris) about the supernova (28" barrel) and the kind of shooting I would be doing so was moved from the supernova (a $699 deal) to a new Beretta A300 Outlander ($914 deal). I still think the deal in terms of cost for a new A300 is pretty good, but that is where things go awry!

I made the purchase in good faith, the gun was assembled for me and dis-assembled by the sales person. I did not really inspect the gun which is a real mistake on my part. I did check the first 2 guns I was shown which was the Benelli and a new Browning, but I did not check the Beretta!

A couple of hindsite notes I will take away from this.

1. The Benelli and the Browning were both fully packaged with the suppliers packing, the Beretta was just in a box.
2. I should have checked the firearm thoroughly before I paid for it.
3. I was too eager to make the purchase.

I then went home and before I put it away decided to give it a full clean to make sure it was ready to take out and shoot when the weather is warmer (currently -47 is no fun). On checking the bore I noticed that is was absolutely filthy after about 20 runs with the brass brush and soft cloths it came out clean! Then I notice the markings down the barrel from the shot, I immediately thought this is a second hand gun and I purchased a brand new one. So I decided the next day to drive the 1.5 hours again to see what they had to say.

I spoke with the first sales rep who said he felt it was not used even though there are some chips in the ejector hole and the fact that the gun was filthy before I cleaned it. Then I was passed onto the owner of the shop, he was pretty condescending about how guns are not pretty toys and that they get marked up. He then went on to say that the reason the bore was dirty was because the manufacturer has to test fire 60 rounds through the gun before it is shipped (seems he cannot agree on that because in a previous comment in regard to another post about poor service he said it was 40 rounds?). I also mentioned the fact that there was what appeared to be a deformity in the barrel, I was corrected because this is for the gas ejection (I am still learning). So I then asked if they had another gun I could look at (I knew they had another for sale in there inventory), he brought out the other gun and I could immediately see the gun was still packed, there was oil residue all over the gun and when I inspected the barrel I saw that while it was still dirty it definitely was no where near as bad as the one I had just cleaned up. I asked if he would swap the one he had sold me as new for then one I could see is definitely new. His answer was the same as he had give the other poster about the transfer of warranty and that I would have to pay a restocking fee ($120) as the gun would now have to be sold as used! He then went on to say that if I have any problems I should talk with the Beretta rep directly and gave me his number.

I cannot definitely say the gun was used, but all indications would point to that. I am new to this game but I cannot see how swapping out a gun would void the warranty? The fact is I was a first time buyer at the shop, I spent a lot of time and money going to the shop to make sure I got the right gun, the sales staff I encountered were excellent and I was definitely encouraged to get the right gun for all the right reasons. But in the end this has left me with a very bad taste about dealing with Epps in the future, I am not writing this to whine about the store but just to make others aware of just what to expect. It was my dumb stupidity that got me here and I will live with that. I will never buy from Epps again just for this reason, as a new gun enthusiast I feel very wronged by someone who should be encouraging new buyers and giving them a great gun purchasing experience.

I don't really see anything conclusive that it was used. If the exterior is mint and you got the full warranty I wouldn't be that concerned. I know this is hard earned money but I think you might be blowing this out of proportion. Just being in a box is likely because it was a floor demo, and unfortunately boxes get misplaced. Also, you saw what you were getting and it wasn't an issue at time of purchase.

If you are still upset or worried about getting a used gun I would outright return it and eat the fees.

When you patron a reputable business and they sell you something NIB, I would expect it to be just that. If I am buying something from the street, I would expect to have to inspect it. For a store to sell you something new and have it be anything but that is wrong and criminal. Newtoit, I am happy to hear that this hasnt seriously tarnished your outlook and you obviously havent placed 100% blame. That shows you are a reasonable person. Very upsetting to hear that you got taken. I hope Epps will make it right for you.

Sorry to hear it.

Unfortunately, you should have definitely should have inspected before purchase. But now you know. I also learned a painful lesson with an relatively expensive rifle I purchased years ago (also my second gun), with off center holes in a stock (though it was brand new, I just didn't inspect it enough).

But a really sh*tty thing of a store to do, trying to market what certainly appears to be a used gun as new. I would definitely expect all the packaging to be in tact etc.

Just my 2 cents...

Cheers,
F

Epps charged me a restocking fee on a gun that never even got approved for transfer.

My club membership expired, and the CFO would not transfer it until I submitted my new club membersip.

I called epps to cancel the order and they charged me a 10% based restocking fee.

The customer service rep said the fee covers the paperwork to do the transfer.

I said that other businesses do not charge for that, AND, that how is it fair to use a percentage instead of a flat fee?

Think, if I would have bought a $300 np 22 I would only be charged $30, but a $3000 KAC would be $300? for the same paperwork?
(I was charged $110, for nothing)

GO #### YOURSELF EPPS! you will not see another dime of mine.

sad thing is that used to stop quite often, and always brought a few friends, now I actively tell people to avoid buying guns there.

This is clearly your fault not theirs. Why should they have to hold a gun for free while you cannot get your act together. They missed out on business by not selling it to someone else.

Also to the OP. It is a good story for us all to learn from. thank you for posting.

I've only dealt with Epps through their web page. I purchased two handguns about a year apart and had absolutely no issues. The second one took a bit longer (two weeks or so to ship) but that was from the CFO dragging their heels a bit.

I'm sorry to hear about the firearm and the questionable response you got. A rule of thumb is one happy customer tells three friends but an unhappy one tells ten or in the case of here, hundreds.

Epps has turned into a joke.

I am am also not a fan of there shop, it's always a mess, hard to find what you need as there is no rhyme or reason to some stock placement, and a lot of the gems are hidden away and you have to ask for it when you can snag a staff member.

not the same as it used to be

I had trouble at EPPS twice with poor attitudes over the phone. I learned my lesson the first time but I saw an add for something not available anywhere else in Canada and had to have it. It was like the same "pleasant" fellow answered the phone.

I think you probably received a new firearm. I'm not calling you a liar rather trusting Epps because of their outstanding reputation.

few things...

1. restocking fees *should be based on the CC merchant fee - edit, thanks OSTS*

2. you do not need a club or range membership to own or buy restricted firearms, CFO screwed me, Epps took advantage of that.

3. They missed out on a lot more business by burning a customer... so I do not feel bad for them at all.

I used to browse their store and website regularly.
I have bought a few things at Epps, every time (4 or 5) I bought something I had an issue with rude staff, lack of knowledgeable service, and long wait times.
so they can fail as a business as far as I am concerned. There are better dealers with much better customer service out there.

I used to love going to Epps, I can understand now why people are reconsidering going there as well. My most recent visit I was looking to buy a .357 but wanted a good deal. I had asked them what they had in stock and I was given a condescending answer like I was supposed to already know. I asked to look at a Smith 686 and when he brought it out it looked new but the cylinder was stiff and had hairline scuffs. I asked to look at another of the same model and I got a tired sigh from the sales rep. He said they were ALL like that because they were new but he brought it out anyway. I guess he was right, they were the same. Not wanting to spend a lot on a gun I didn't want to break in, I asked to look at his used Rugers and then he looked at me and asked if I was going to actually buy anything?? (Which I did, I dont drive 1.5 hours for nothing.)

But their sales rep made me feel like I wasn't welcome there unless I knew exactly what I was looking for. I get that they're busy, but that doesn't excuse them from being rude to their patrons because they're asked to simply do their job and answer questions. It wasn't an isolated incident either.

Now I buy and sell on the EE with people who actually like to talk. No more 1.5 hour drives for me, thanks.

I will take that advice and continue to examine all firearms I am considering buying. Used is always a crapshoot. A gun that cycles well dry might be balky after firing, like a pump gun or a semi rimfire. Anytime I have returned a used firearm, I was able to get store credit for the restocking charges and was able to use it on another gun or ammo. So far all the new guns they have sold me are AOK.

I purchased a new 586 there a few weeks back. The first one they showed me was handled a lot you could see that and I asked to see a second one. I did take the second one as it was as new. Then after a week I called and asked if it was shipped they said it was and I should have received the gun. The lady I spoke with was very nice and proceeded to find out what happened with the order. She called back and apologized for the delay and also refunded my shipping costs . All I can say is always look at two guns and buy the one that looks like it has not been handled to death. I have no issues dealing with Epps

Can you post pictures of the chips on the ejector for us please? It's hard for us to judge, because even that could be from them test firing the gun.
