Well - Pattern 14's are known to have feed issues. The problem relates to using a mauser style action to feed rimmed cartridges. The star modification was implemented to assist in feeding, to varying degrees of success. BSA sporters will often have the guide rails ground down slightly to assist in feeding. My own experience with several P-14s is that the bullet profile (spire point vs round nose) often determines whether a given rifle will feed effectively.
So you may find that the spring may or may not be the issue. Usually a weak spring causes a failure to pick up rounds when the mag is lightly loaded. You can play around with this by stretching the existing spring. Be warned, the follower and other mag parts were not standardized amongst the manufacturers of the P-14, and should not be interchanged. Good luck with your efforts...

As per Charles Stratton book, "Pattern 1914 and U.S. Model of 1917", page 53, the "first variation" follower was used by Winchester, and is marked on the underside with a "W". The "second variation" was used by Eddystone and Remington. The second variation will be marked on the underside with an "E", "R" or unmarked. The two variations have different profiles and cross sections.
