Ethical Question. Do you kill a female bear with a cub?

it is legal to shoot a sow with cub(s) in Ontario. The law that spoke about this was 1) repealed & 2) when it was in vigor applied only during the spring hunt. Ethical? I think there are answers enough. Actually out on the Sep. long weekend and saw a sow with cub. She would have been an easy shot, but we used a camera. We don't use bait so every bear we see is a challenge.

Same in Ontario. OP needs to read the regs more closely.

Where exactly should the OP be reading the regs more closely???? I don't think it's ethical and I most certainly would not shoot a sow with cubs, however please point out where it is in the regs before you start insulting people because I think your mistaken.

I had a look at the Ontario hunting regs in regard to black bear. it does in fact not state anywhere that it's illegal to shoot a sow with cubs;

I'm very surprised OFAH and other organizations haven't tried to petition the government to make this practice illegal. It would certainly help in trying to get the spring hunt reinstated, especially considering the spring hunt was cancelled mainly due to the anti's continuous preaching of spring bear hunts causing the orphaning of cubs. Immature cubs(young of the year) really don't have much of a chance of survival regardless of whether they are orphaned in spring or fall.

Am I missing something here?

Shoot the mother bear the cubs will make it or not,we have to many ####ing bears(you people in the north say).You are also required to use the gun you stated would be the best for bear defense if you posted in any bear defense threads!!Why so concerned about a bear!

I guess you havnt read the regs in a few years...You should probably brush up on them before you insult someone's reading comprehension.

You're right, I should. I've learned from this thread that the reg has changed (thanks, keninon), and obviously I didn't check before posting. I certainly apologize if my answer was interpreted as "insulting"...it wasn't meant to, but apparently at least two people felt it was.

A lot of these "should I/shouldn't I" threads eventually elicit the response from someone that as long as it's legal, it's okay. I don't buy that at all, but the OP now states that he doesn't feel that way either. If so, then I also apologize for what I was thinking but didn't say.:redface

I still think, however, that it was a very strange question.

Before you make a personal attack on me read the regulations the op is in Sudbury Ontario.Please show were you read it is illegal to shoot mothers with cubs in our fall hunt!!
You can then say you are sorry!If you can find it anywhere I will say I am sorry.
Ps you don't know me are you stating that I hunt illegally please clarify so I know exactly what you statement meant!

Bad idea. The sow will give a warning huff to the cubs, they go up the nearest tree and she starts investigating.

True, to a degree. At our hunting camp in the B.C. interior, over the years there have been a number of instances where we've had to, 'discourage' unwanted company. On one occasion, with meat hanging on the meat pole, we had to discourage a sow and three cubs.

The tree in question, although not visable in this photo, is located on the left. Two of the cubs did hustle up a nearby poplar tree and the marks of their assent are still there. Within a matter of about 15 minutes, the cubs came down, sow and cubs then left and didn't return for the remainder of our stay there. Moose was on the agenda, not Black Bear so the method used was win win for all involved:).

This is what I wrote, perhaps read posts more carefully next time:

You quoted my link to the Ontario Hunting Regulations and wrote "bad internet advice". Was it wrong to assume you therefore don't follow hunting regulations? You do the math.

Guess you don't follow hunting regulations? To be honest, I'm not the least bit surprised.

What does this mean???????????????

Perhaps you feel that I feel the regulations are bad internet advise,I was stating that the posters on the forum give bad advise,when all you need to do is read the regulations.How many uniformed ass hats said it was illegal to shoot mother bears with cubs!

You didn't state that, you only quoted the link to the regs. You have however clearly given your opinion on shooting sows with cubs;

Shoot the mother bear the cubs will make it or not,we have to many f**king bears(you people in the north say).

And consequently with that attitude, your opinion(s) mean FA to me and I have far better things to do than participate in your childish internet squabbling, I'm done.

Perhaps before you call someone on illegal hunting you should know what you are talking about I feel I have a case for defamation!
