European Load data for 8MM Mauser

I am interested in loading my 98k with something more powerful like the European loads as a apposed to the weaker North American loads, any ideas on recipes??

What bullet weights are you considering? or what game are you considering hunting with some full throttle 8x57 loads ?

I'm just betting back into reloading for my 98k after a few years off from it. I can't find my old notes, but right now I'm playing with the following: 150gr Speer, 47.6gr of 4064. Your mileage may vary,

I'm a bit leery of such a light bullet in a 98K as I've observed that lighter bullets don't seem to group as well in my rifle. However, I did find a bunch of 150gr Speers pretty cheap, so figured I'd play around a bit and see how they work out.

I had other loads, mostly around 180gr and 200gr bullets and IMR 4064 (or Varget). If I do end up finding my old reloading notebook, I'll send those your way.

For the 180 through 200 grain bullets, I found Vihtavuori hard to beat. Either N540, N150 or N550 worked best.
It was not hard to get 2750 out of a 180, and 2600+ out of a 195 Hornady with N550.
One problem that reared its head was the difference in case capacity from brand to brand. Dave.

From Speer No. 10, circa 1979. Quote: "the loads here exceed SAAMI maximum":

Here is a fine selection of 8x57 European ammo. Apparently most of it is in stock...

There is a neat little publication called "The Complete Reloading Manual for the 8 mm Mauser", published by load books USA. I got my copy on ebay. It is excellent for getting decent load data. For example 200 gr bullet @ 2700 fps.

Has anyone else noticed that for a given bullet weight and for powders slower than 4895 that 8X57 and 30-06 loads are practically identical?

Ive noticed they are pretty much on par with most powders I use, 4064, 3031, 4895, Varget, RE17 and such. Both a great rounds for big game hunting.

My load is Hornady 150gr SP over 51.1 grains of IMR 4350. I have the bullet seated so that it's about 30 thousands from the rifling. It shoots to almost 1/2 MOA (5/8" at 100m). Kills black bears just fine too. Oh rifle is a sportizered VZ24.
