I hope this has not been hashed out .I like European rifles but most require Long Eye Relief scopes and base extensions [SUCKS]
They seem to hold nice and balance well but It is hard to get proper eye relief .Is this just my old weary eyes or what is it .
I know what steered me away from the beautiful American Ruger NO1 was the mounts way up the barrel ,I just got a Sauer 200 and it too needs Extensions and long eye relief scopes. I had many with 14 plus inch LOP I am not the smallest I stand 6 foot 1 inch

Its a pain for me please chime in

thanks

In general I'm finding it hard to find an affordable scope with decent eye relief.

I'm on scope number five, dial in the mag aaand pinhole.

A lot of the blame can go to modern scope manufacturers... they seem to be trying to make them as short as possible. I like the old Leupold M8 4x with the long tube. Lots of room to move it back and forth, and no need for extentions. It's just not very versatile when it come to longer range shooting though.

thats right scopes are too short. All my scopes are set back as far as mounting will allow. If the tubes gave another half inch or so it would make a big difference.only my busnell 6500 1.25x8 has a lot of eye relief but its kind of funny and i prefer a longer scope with more normal eye relief like my leica or burris eurodiamond.

Yes, European rifles seem mostly set up for iron sights, with little attention paid to eye relief (or sometimes even cheek weld) for scopes, since so much hunting in Europe is done at closer ranges.

And yes, scope manufacturers are to blame for all the scopes with 3" or less of usable eye relief that give so many of us issues. Like porpoise, almost every scope I own is set back as far as they can be...

Making scopes with an honest 4" of eye relief at all magnifications wouldn't actually drive any scope manufacturers out of business....

I have a Tikka 695 and it is fine. The rail I guess allows me to put the scope where I want it. My CZ scope and rings set up nice as well. I also own a Husky that has the scope mounted fine come to think of it. All of them have Leupold VXIII's, 3.5X10X40.
I used to own this Savage, made in 1991 as a limited run in 7X57. This gun was a B#$%^ to mount the scope. The bases were really hard to fine and once I found a set ( Burris) I had to use Leupold extension rings to mount the scope. Clay from Prophet river actually had seen this problem before and helped me out. That said I sold the gun on here with the rings and bases so the next guy wouldn't have any issues.
I agree that the problem may have been with the scope being too compact, but I am totally sold on European guns as they have been nothing but great.

I think the long eye relief scopes are a result of the style of hunting. Hunters are often put in stands that have existed for generations, while a organized group drives game towards the firing line. Most shots would have to happen rather fast and at moving animals. A long eye relief scope would allow quick targeting.

100 yds. is a loong shot to a German. ;) They also hunt at night, so the large scope objectives and the high mounts to go with them.

Grizz

I wonder if this is why I have seen some older European rifles with single ring attachments.

I have tried this with a modern scope/rifle/ring set up and it seems to help the eye relief issue but I'm not sure how it would effect accuracy and it just looks rather...odd.

Even my leapold 1x4 has stupid short eye relief...ugh.

Ken... there is no reason to steer away from a No.1 due to eye relief, an extension ring in the rear mount is all that is required... but I agree that Ruger should shift the rear mount location 1" back... see pics below;
