I thought I read somewhere that European rifles had their tip-off scope mounting grooves at a different dimension from North American? And how do I measure it?

I have a scope from a Tyrol 5522 with tip-off mounts which is too narrow for my other rimfire rifles. Odd. Or maybe too wide, I forget.

45CAT is correct. Your Tyrol should have 11mm dovetail grooves on the receiver. It should be noted that the section between the grooves may differ between makes of rifles. Some are flat, while others may be round. CZ, for example, is flat between the grooves and Anschutz is round. Some makes of scope rings may not accomodate both. It's worth noting that some dovetail rings will work for both 11mm and 3/8" grooves if they have a reversible clamp designed for the purpose (see the third image below as an example of Warne rimfire rings with a reversible clamp).

They're appx .050 thousandths inches larger than their North American made counterparts.

If you use a North American made scope ring, it will be slightly offset. Not enough to make a real difference when shooting but it is noticeable.

A standard .375 grooved ring will fit very tightly in my experience. Usually I just use a triangular file to open the dovetail cut out on the rings.

11mm rings can be difficult to find and if you're in to much of a hurry to wait for mail delivery, modifying a .375 set works just fine.
