If I want a pretty gun, it would likely be european, and I love those Drillings. But, for a hunting gun, it will be North American. Solid and reliable, is all I ask.

I'm vain...in addition to being accurate, reliable, tough...it has to look good too. Which is why there are no Winchesters in my apt.

I just don't get the idea that N. American guns are more reliable. :|

Remington has had safety recalls on the Model 600/660, Model 700 and 710.

they only made a trillion of them... bound to have problems

Sako had recalls too because they were blowing up in people's faces :|

Is it fanciness and engineering, or is it simplicity and reliability?

This assumes that you can't have all of these features. Or at least all but simplicity.

I suggest that you can have it all. Gatehouse, you wouldn't have bought your awesome .300WSM if a factory Winchester was up to your standards. You wanted more, and the American factories don't give it to you. I think that is the issue.

Yeah, you're right. Winchester wasn't up to my standards (Although I would admit that I could have hutned withthe rifle as it came, out of the box and it would have worked fine. It was already an accurate rifle in factory form)

However- The Euro guns couldn't have given me what I wanted, either.

I dont' have the experience with as many rifles as Leeper does, nor could I have made the point that he makes as well as he did. But it's generally how I feel about Euro guns.

There is an old German fellow in our club, he has some amazing rifles. They are beautiful, a couple of drillings, some combo rifles and a Blaser.

They all have excellent wood, some have intricate engraving.

He and I where at the range not too ong ago and he looked at my new rifle and said "I hate plastic stocks" and "Euros and NA's have different ideas abotu guns."

That abotu sums it up. His rifles are beautiful, but I don't care if I win a fashion show. And I woudl never take his rifes where I intend to go with mine.

tehy woudl probably work fine, but what's the point in paying big bucks for fine wood, when you are just goign to bash the #### out of it?

I've been there and done that. :D

Someone here was saying that Martini and Hagn produce guns equal to european guns.Well, the reason for that is :Hagn went to Gunsmithing school in Austria and is German origin and Ralph Martini is German as well.Of course, both bring a wealth of knowledge and experience from their former country and their craftsmanship is as european as it gets.I voted for european guns as i've to see an out of the box american rifle shoot as well as my steyr-Mannlicher.I do like Remmies and Winnies but i'm leaning towards my Steyr, when it comes to accuracy and reliability.

I do'nt think that the european Husquarna's, Carl Gustav's, Lee-Enfields, Parker-Hale, Mausers, etc, are any better than american Winchesters, Rugers, S&W, Mossbergs, Marlin, Garand etc., and visa versa.

Most custom guns, regardsless of national origin, are wonderful and practical pieces of art.

Like with everything else in life, its a matter of what you think is better, real or imaginary that often counts, when you make a choice, from women to guns.

Spoken like a true old German. Not exactly open minded

Blaser. UGH.

I hope you're kidding right. :?:

Blaser is not "old school" it's a fairly new company, and they do cater to more than just the guys with a seven figure bank account...

Yes they do nice work but their new blaser r93 off-road would not be out of place in your or my neck of the woods. Take a look-see. :)

Cheers,

Alex

I've shot Blasers beofre. UGH.

I like the feature of changing a barrel, but it's not that important to me. :D

You fellas stop it, I'm dribbling over my keyboard. I used to pop into to Purdey and Boss regularly to pick up shotgun cartridges whilst working, they always let you walk around and give you brochures without asking. I look like the arse is hanging out of my trousers yet they are always polite and seem pleased to help. I used to show my aussie colleagues around the St james gunshops and gentlemans outfitters, good fun!

It's interesting that a NA favorite is the pre64 Winchester which is basically a Mauser 98 of European origin with some superficial differences ;)
