Ever buy a new "premium" rifle and be disappointed in the wood and/or metal finish?

Learn your facts.

As Kurgan pointed out, you live in a big southern city, many of us don't. Try finding just the right Sauer takedown say, in stock, in your town of 3,500.

I do not live in the South. I live in 2nd most eastern province in this Country. I do not live in a big city either. I live in a rural COMMUNITY, not a town, of less than 500.

Very true and even the best stocked Canadian gun stores do not usually carry high-end custom guns. Entering the realm beyond regular production guns typically found in a gunshop carries the risk that what arrives might not entirely meet expectations.

Three times I've ordered new custom guns. One gun exceeded expectations in every respect, another met them but was not quite perfect in a couple regards and the third was a minor disappointment that required some additional gunsmithing to bring it up to the standard I wanted.

Even with the gun that required a little extra work ordering a custom gun is something I would do again without hesitation.

Get my facts straight, eh? :) Thanks for the chuckle. So you live south of most Canadians, and likely about 15 full degrees south of our home but that's not the south (you also list Halifax as your location- anything within 3 hours of a big city isn't exactly isolated). Don't think there are too many places in Nova Scotia where you're 14 to 16 hours round trip to a city with selection to handle, as is our case. So, if you can help me handle a Satterlee Titanium before buying without traveling thousands of kms, I'd be much obliged.

Looked at a few coopers last month, the checkering on the wood was crap, just awful. For a 2K$ rifle I would expect better. From the big higher end makers I have never really been disappointed in thier quality, design etc yes, but not quality, but some makers like BSA and the like I have always found poor wood to be thier problem.

I bought a Cooper Jackson hunter about a year ago in .280 AI. Although the rifle shoots amazingly well the cheap POS Bell and Carlson stock leaves a lot to be desired.I would have hoped for more from a $2000.00 rifle. I'm really considering having a stock made for it. The other complaint I have is that it is heavy....stinkin heavy.

Them cooper's are heavy because the Barrels are Fat.When my Dad showed me his 280AI cooper rifle for the first time, the first thing I said was "why does it have a target barrel on it....?" well they dont have target barrels but they are heavy barreled rifles.....

Even though I find the cooper to be heavy,it didnt bother me walking around for miles with it on my shoulder.I have a 300 WBY mag that weighs the same as dad's Cooper and my shoulder gets fitigued carring around the weatherby but for some reason it doesnt with the cooper???.it's just the way them cooper rifles carry,i guess. That is one of many reasons why I decided to order my own cooper rifle!

I can vouch for NEW model 70s. My buddy ar180shooter has a supergrade in 30-06 and it's fantastic in every way. All the new winchester m70s are just wonderful from what I've seen. Very consistent. Here's his rig, and I'm jealous of it.

Nice Rig! super grades have many nice cosmetic features like unique checkering pattern, the jeweled bolt, checkered bolt knob, shawdow line cheek piece and the cross bolt heads are even checkered.

They just got to get rid of that black plastic tip and use Ebony Wood!

My cousin has a 270 in a supergrade,The wood on his so nice that it's just a grade below exibition walnut. He even got the floor plate and alot of the other metal case color hardened aswell the follower was jewelled.the plastic tip is the only thing that stands out, however it's just a cosmetic thing which I'm sure for a few dollors you can swap out for an ebony tip.

I would'nt hesitate to buy a M70 Win Super Grade,someday!

Now that's a rifle! I would give my left nut for one like that!

Unfortunately, not all people who reside in rural or remote areas have easy access to fully stocked gun stores. The reality for many is online purchases, which can be risky.

I live in Cranbrook; a meer 5 minutes away from Ralph, and I've promised him beer...........The agony of having to stand in that shop without placing an order!

Lol @ replace everything
That being said.....
I know someone who bought a handmade rifle and the wood and metal finish was horrible.... Not the makers issue but the customs ofice. Seems that a gun can be used as a hockey stick in the customs office.

I am debating on whether or not I should strip the utilitarian polyurethane finish from my Brno's wood stock and properly finish in tung or linseed oil. The walnut is beautiful, but the current finish is lacking! Maybe I've become too picky and should leave well enough alone.

My BLR had shiny crap all over it, i stripped it and oiled it with tung oil, very nice now

You just dropped 2K on CZ, when you could have had a Super Grade 70 for $1150? Dude.

Sell it and buy what you appear to have wanted in the first place. No need for the amputation....

The Brno has really grown on me... nice, sturdy rifle. However, I would trade it in a heart beat for a Super Grade like that.
"Now here come's Johnny with a pecker in his hand, he's a one ball man and he's off to the rodeo..." oh, never mind :)
