Ever get lost? Do you carry a GPS while hunting?

I've been lost once before on a fishing trip in Newfoundland when a real bad fog rolled in. Even in places you know well can be tough when dusk sets in or with thick fog. I had to resort to following direction by looking at moss on the trees and the lean on the treetops due to prevailing SW winds.

I'm a map nut and this year I added a GPS with mapsource software. This stuff is the best thing I have found next to the actual topo maps. We are leaving for a different WMU that none of us hunted in before or even scouted so it should be a challange. Drive in and hope for the best!

I agree with "walksalot"

I use the compass most of the time, and I use the GPS when my head and my compass dont agree with each other.

Most hunters can't read a map.

I just have a cheap Garmin $120 etrex, but its plenty for what i use it for.

As for getting lost, I always knew where I was; I just didn't know where the hell anything else was.......

Yes, I carry a gps in the bush although in BC where I live it isn't really necessary!

Spent many years in Search and Rescue and it always amazed me how unprepared some hunters/hikers were for a survival situation.

Where I live is in the coast mountains! That means a lot of Valleys and rivers to follow. Also getting a gps reading can sometimes be difficult in these circumastances.

I never go out without taking adequate survival gear, inculding the means to start a fire, food and water!

Lol!
Is that like, "No matter where you are, there you are."? :p
With that in mind, no matter where you are, make sure you can take care of yourself.
Hey, I've gotten lost on the damned 115 on my way to Peterborough when that bloody fog kicks up. Anybody who know that stretch can vouch for that.

Lost

I haven't been lost since the time I was 12 or 13 years old one summer on a fishing trip with a friend and believe me I don't want to experince that feeling again. I'm sort of a lone wolf and when I go hunting I am prepared for 2 days in the wilderness. Basics,rifle,K-bar 10 inch blade, compas and know how to use it, basic survival food for a couple of days, spare clothing and something to construct a shelter and firestarter. I limit my backpack to 20 pounds including my rifle, yes it can be done, my rifle is 5lb 3 oz.
