Ever reach up and grab the wrong cannister off the powder shelf and start loading?

Seems I grabbed the Plutonium. Neat muzzle flash we captured yesterday from my antique Colt SAA .41 Long Colt, 20 grs of FFFg. Yes, my coworker (shooting) is missing his trigger finger, he was shooting arrows at parliament hill.

I've never grabbed the wrong powder, but once I loaded a bullet (8x57mm) into a primed case, that had no powder in it. That coulda been nasty! I got lucky though and the bullet didn't travel far enough into the barrel, so I could not chamber another round.
I was trying to cycle another bullet into the rifle and the bolt wouldn't close and I'm like, "Wtf!?..." But my buddy knew what must have happened and we took a look and sure enough, there was a bullet just engaging the rifling... :eek:
 
Never grabed the wrong powder and started to load , However Just last week I had a reminder to always empty your powder measure to it's original container as soon as you finnish up! I left an inch or so of powder in my measure and set out to start loading a new caliber and after adding another couple of inches of (very simmilar) looking powder Then checking the charge that it was throwing . I realised that the powder in the bottom of the measure was actualy AA1680 and the powder added was WC735 . Visualy identical powder. So into the garden it went. Not meaning to hijack the thread but !!! This is just another example of how a moments inatention can lead to a mistake at the bench. Just my 2 cents worth!
 
I bought two cans of shotgun powder at a gunshow last year. They were both the same type and one was unopened and the other was half empty. I started using the partial and had dismal performance. When I checked the unopened can of powder, it was completely different in appearance.
Good thing I used a slower powder than I wanted, rather than the other way around.
 
I bought a part can of powder from a gun show once. Had to dump it, it was way hotter than the 4831 it purported to be. A quick comparison confirmed it.

I've also had the experience of having my eyeball skip to the facing page in the reloading book. Caught that one before it left the bench though.

Yesterday I loaded 4 different bullets for the 9.3x62: 285gr Norma Oryx, 286 Norma Alaska, 286 Hornady IL and 286 Nosler Partitions (each with 57.5grs RL15).

I went to the rifle range so I could test these over the Chrony, and try to figure out which might be the most accurate, at the same time.

I get down there, get everything set up, look around... no bullets. :redface:

When I went out the door I set them on the shelf beside all my other gear, and left 'em there, so I wasted my time.

Now I gotta find a few hours some time in the next week. I'm taking that rifle bear hunting, and I need to settle on which bullet I want to take.
 
Never done it myself. I only load 9mm but I use 3 different powders for different purposes. When I load the hopper I put a masking tape label on it in case some time passes before I load again

At least your range is close to town, I miss living in Whitecourt, I worked at the airport so the range was on the way home. Was a nice setup, miss it, the hay bales are quite something there now. I'm still a member but get there once a year lately.
 
I have a small collection of blown up guns. None by me. The most common cause was the powder thrower getting dumped back into the wrong can, contaminating the can.

All but one were ball pistol powder dumped into ball rifle powder cans. Two were 296 dumped into 748. Blew up real good...

This is why it is good to leave the powder can on the bench. Don't put it back on the shelf with the others.

I ran it through one of my wife's cooking screen thingies. The ball powder went through, the coarse grained extruded powder didn't. Then I hammered it all through the .375 H&H as slightly reduced plinking loads. If a spec or two of the slower burning RL22 made it through it didn't hurt anything, except maybe my pride.
