Bought some reloads off a range officer, thats right, some years ago for the 1917 SMLE I had. Pulled the trigger, heard a loud pop and watched as the bullet went about ten feet. Turns out he bought some unknown powder from somebody. Never buy reloads from anyone, I make mine very carefully now.
 
P14, rebarreled to 300 Win mag. Only barrel was screwed on crooked! So, loaded case right full of bullseye, yep, bullseye, loaded a .311 bullet on top, chambered round, pulled the rope :rockOn: . Shattered stock, action was split like a banana, lugs set back, brass "brazed " on to the end of bolt and barrel laying a ways away. Interestingly enough bullet was half way down barrel, later pushed out without any effort with a cleaning rod. Can post pics of action when I get home. I keep the action by my reloading bench just to "scare" some people ;)

This rifle will not normally fire out of battery, Unless the loaded shell is slightly over sized and creates enough friction to stop the bolt before it fully chambers the shell. If the shells are of correct size they chamber easily and this problem does not exist. SSSOOOO handloaders take note when loading for this rifle make sure the brass is full length resized, and check the (unloaded) brass in the chamber BEFORE trying you're handloads.

You're absolutely correct about that. It did happen with a reload. There was nothing else available to shoot out of them in those days.

It's illegal for an individual to sell reloads anyway....just something to keep in mind.
 
If you can find a copy of PO ackley's reloading manual vol 2 he does tests on military actions by adding powder till they blow up. Very interesting reading
He also explained how they used to test bullets on live pigs back in the day!f

Yikes! Good thing you listened to those alarm bells. How hard was that thing to get out of the barrel? Was the barrel damaged?
