I purchased a Char Broil Big Easy Oil Less Turkey Fryer on sale recently for an upcoming annual hunt. After years of using a traditional turkey fryer and never really feeling comfortable using one plus the expense of gallons of oil and pain in the butt clean up etc. I decided to give one of these a try. Reviews on the unit and the ends results with foods were all really good and videos on youtube made it appear very user friendly and safe so I picked one up and saturday evening gave it a whirl. It took about 20 minutes to assemble and get cleaned and ready for use. We followed the intstructions to season the cooking chamber which took about another 15 minutes then we popped a 13.5 lb butterball turkey in and followed the cooking guidelines using the supplied instructions and meat thermometer. Two hours later we had a turkey that was cooked to absolute perfection. It had that turkey fryer taste without using a ton of oil. We used 2 tbsps of peanut oil as per instructions brushed onto the cooking chamber(for seasoning the chamber) and basket and bird to prevent sticking to the basket and to aid in browning the skin. There wasn’t much leftover for sandwiches the next day once the 5 of us dug in.

Where do you get it?
How much aproximitly does it cost?
Does it need a heat source?
If so would it be safe headed from a gas stove burner?
Are there any drippings created for any gravy?

Thinking that would be a interesting idea for a dinner at the camp7

One of our camp members had one two years ago and they are fantastic. He did 2 turkeys the first week and there was no complaints at all, we ate so much turkey it was great.
I have a oil fryer and have only used it once, so much work after cooking.

It runs on propane. It has a hose and regulator with fitting to hook to a propane tank. There is no heat adjustment. You simply set it to start and dial the autoigniter. Once lit you put your turkey in and thats it. It comes with a hook to place the basket in the chamber and lift it out once cooked or to check on it. Clean up is a breeze. When finished cooking leave it run 15 minutes then turn off. Once cooled lift the chamber out, wipe any excess drippings off then coat with a light coat of vegetable oil. They recommend you do that instead of washing in order to season it just like a cast iron skillet. It has a tapered bottom with a hole in the chamber leading to a slide in/out grease tray with an aluminum foil pan inside to catch drippings to keep the tray clean and allow you to use your drippings for gravy.
Not sure I understand your apron question? No apron needed if that is what you mean? There is no splattering or oil bubbling. The flame heats the chamber and it uses radiant heat to cook the meat. Its a very simple unit to use and can be used for roasts, corn on the cob, potatoes etc. Clean up is 5 minutes tops including washing the food basket afterwards and the thermometer. I’ll be cooking a turkey for the gf and I after work today for our thanksgiving dinner. I’m very pleased with the unit so far. I paid $130 on sale at Cabelas.

old g/f had one they are great on any kind of roast beef, pork or Chicken its all good. Bit of a pig on propane but it makes excellent food and minimum clean up. Also unlike traditional oil fryers the chances of an accidental inferno are greatly reduced

How do you do wings, fries, a oil deep fryer can do more then just turkeys, and what clean up just dump the oil and good to go, boil some water in the pot and finished.

They have a wing/leg rack available for it. I like that there is no oil to deal with. I still have a deep fryer unit but its relegated to boiling water only from now on for corn roasts etc or with a big cast iron skillet for fish fry’s.

I've had one for years. Mine's called a Thermos Heatwave...same thing. I do turkey at the hunt camp as well. 10 min per pound...16 pound turkey = 160 minutes. No preheating. No basting. Turkey must be thawed; not cooked from frozen, NO stuffing.
I just spray some Pam cooking spray on the rack to keep from sticking.
I don't use the kitchen oven for turkey anymore. Just brush the bird with oil, seasoning and into the cooker. Turkey comes out perfect!!!
There is a little drawer to catch drippings for gravy. I have done a couple of chickens in it by placing some metal rods across, mid point in the rack to make a second shelf to hold up a another whole chicken...remember the kids game "kerplunk"...like that.
I will be doing a roast beef dinner this year in it at camp.

I have had one for a few years as well. Cooks turkey to perfection and Sears the outside to lock the juices in. We have done many many turkeys in ours as well as roast beef. If you watch the thermometer closely you can get a nice roast well done on the outside and rare or med rare on the inside. We got ours at Canadian Tire and it's labeled as Thermos I believe. The only downside is no stuffing and I have never tried emptying the drip tray to use for gravy.

Got home around 5:15 last night from work. About 15 mins prep and into the cooker went a 10lb bird for the GF and I for our thanksgiving. She kept looking in the cooker every so often and was in awe of how it cooked. Serving time and she prefers the dark meat so trimmed up a bit of leg and thigh meat for her. She was sold! Said she never did turkey as her memories of it as a kid were that it was too dry, she preferred chicken. I then had her try a slice of breast even though she is not a fan of white meat. She couldn’t believe how juicy and tender it was and really liked the flavour. Left for work this morning and she says “I’ll be making hot turkey sandwiches for supper”. I know I’m looking forward to it. I wish I’d known about these units a few years ago.
